An open letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal, Re: the new contraceptive pill "Lybrel,"

In reference to your May 23, 2007 article [1] regarding the new contraceptive pill "Lybrel," we continue to be amazed at the never-ending enslaving of women by making them choose a variety of birth control pills which are variations of the same deadly steroid chemicals!   As that well-known pamphlet from the Breast Cancer Institute states: "If it is not okay for him [athletes] to take steroids, why is it okay for her," referring to women 18-49?    Why can't the media and the medical profession be more responsible in warning women that birth control pills, the patches, or injections such as Depo-Provera are dangerous SYNTHETIC STEROID CHEMICALS? These not only cause "an increase risk of blood clots, heart attacks and strokes," but the writer left out the most notorious effect of the pill on women — breast cancer — with a 40% increase in the last 30 years.

One of the modes of action of the birth control pill [steroids] is to alter the normal growth and development of the endometrium. After the ovum and the sperm cell unite at CONCEPTION, a new human life begins. It takes 5 to 7 days for the conceived baby to travel to the uterus to implant and remain there for the next 9 months.  Therefore, when the baby arrives in the womb of a woman on the birth control pill, the baby finds the mucus membrane, which lines the uterine cavity responsible for its survival, to be insufficient to support new life.  By lowering the dosage of the "active ingredients," as the writer purposely avoids the word "steroids," an increased number of breakthrough ovulations will take place. Thus, an increase number of chemical abortions will occur with the "Lybrel" pill.

However, of course, "Lybrel" makes billions of dollars for irresponsible pharmaceutical companies such as Wyeth, who are keeping women ignorant of the truth and continue using them as guinea pigs as Wyeth did in Puerto Rico in the past.
An article on a new birth control pill is as newsworthy as a tobacco company producing a new cigarette with the same harmful components. Of course, it is going to produce the same harmful diseases!
The FDA continues to rule on the side of the pharmaceutical companies, instead of the health of the individual patient and the general population they are obligated to serve and protect.

Why do the media and the medical profession fail to denounce the catastrophes caused by the expansion of the use of artificial methods of birth control? Is the increase in promiscuity — which is causing venereal diseases in epidemic proportions, the dramatic increase in divorces, the population implosion of the West, and many more calamities — not worthy of their attention and concern?

Why is the media reluctant to inform their readers that there is a NATURAL alternative that is even more effective than all artificial methods of birth control, including sterilization, but lacks the millions to advertise its benefits and its existence?
The "Ovulation Method" is the most widely used natural method being practiced in over 100 countries around the world and is available in 21 languages. Its success is primarily due to the generosity of a few donors, thousands of missionaries, and volunteers who have given their lives to teaching and training others around the world.  Published studies of the Ovulation Method from the West as well as the developing world, including The People's Republic of China, have confirmed a 98-99% effectiveness rate in postponing pregnancy as well as a high success rate in helping couples achieve pregnancy. A recent comparative study confirmed that couples who practice this natural method hardly ever divorce.

The major difference between the pharmaceutical companies and Natural Family Planning is that we do not provide our services for lucrative purposes, but for the physical, moral, and spiritual well being of all couples.   Natural Family Planning prevents couples from falling into the artificial birth control trap. These dangerous programs continue to be funded with our taxes through agencies like U.S. Agency for International Development, Planned Parenthood, and their numerous subsidiaries worldwide.  Shame on the pharmaceutical companies for continuing to develop lethal chemicals that injure women. Shame on the medical profession for becoming an accomplice of the pharmaceutical companies by their silence. Shame on the U. S. government for betraying women's trust by sponsoring programs at home and abroad, and shame on the media for not informing women of the whole truth.

I’m sure they think themselves geniuses by naming it that, but it’s going to backfire big-time. Marketers are such idiots.

From a 1843 Cookbook:
TO ROAST A KID.

A kid should be cooked the day it is killed, or the day after at
farthest. They are best from three to four months old, and are
only eaten while they live on milk.

Wash the kid well, wipe it dry, and truss it. Stuff the body with
a force-meat of grated bread, butter or suet, sweet herbs, pepper,
salt, nutmeg, grated lemon-peel, and beaten egg; and sew it up to
keep the stuffing in its place. Put it on the spit and rub it over
with lard, or sweet oil. Put a little salt and water into the
dripping-pan, and baste the kid first with that, and afterwards
with its own gravy. Or you may make it very nice by basting it
with cream. It should roast about three hours. At the last,
transfer the gravy to a small sauce-pan; thicken it with a little
butter rolled in flour, give it a boil up, and send it to table in
a boat. Garnish the kid with lumps of currant jelly laid round the
edge of the dish.

A fawn (which should never be kept more than one day) may be
roasted in the same manner; also, a hare, or a couple of rabbits.

You may send to table, to eat with the kid, a dish of chestnuts
boiled or roasted, and divested of the shells.

I’m a little slow tonight. I read this as being “lie brel” and then it dawned on me that it is “liberal.” I was also unaware that birth control pills are basically steroids - though I was dimly aware that they were being shown to carry health risks. This is simply a scandal, concealed by those who have financial motives and those who want to promote a “liberal” lifestyle. An excellent and revealing post.

Shame on this doctor for implying that the ingredients in oral contraceptives pose risks similar to the anabolic steroids abused by body-builders. Shame on him for accusing drug companies of trying to enslave women when it is he who wants to deny them choice and force his method of family planning upon them. And shame on him for "not informing women of the whole truth" by concealing the benefits associated with oral contraceptives. Among them are a dramatically reduced risk of ovarian cancer and significant strengthening of the bones.

Also, there is nothing inherently wrong with synthetic chemicals. I would never take medical advice from someone who cant free himself from the dopey idea that synthetic means bad and natural means good.

This is an hysterical letter that isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. “Enslaving women” with the pill?

“the never-ending enslaving of women by making them choose’

Oh, please. Choice equals enslavement? Au contraire. As Molly Shannon’s Mary Elizabeth might say, my feelings for such hair-on-fire clownery are best expressed by this clip from the TV show MASH.

Hawkeye: Radar, why did you tell Hot Lips and Frank? That was supposed to be a secret. What’s the matter with you?
Radar: I couldn’t help it. They dragged it out of me!
Hawkeye: Dragged it out of you? How?
Radar: By listening.
