Live-blogging from our 2007 National Taxpayers Conference, we now have the results of our Presidential Straw Poll.
Every attendee of our Conference was given a chance to vote for any of the declared Presidential candidates, Republican or Democrat. After counting the votes, we can announce partial results.
Fred Thompson was the winner with 25.7% of the vote.
Ron Paul came in second place with 16.7%.
Rudy Giuliani placed third with 12.5%
Mitt Romney garnered 9.0% of the vote to snag fourth place.
The top five was rounded out by John McCain, who received 5.6%.

It is interesting how you can see a poll as being right and wrong at the same time. The truth is the fact that Paul has more than 2% in this poll shows that it is out of whack. I would put zero stock in this poll even though my candidate is at the top.
So you are saying that Ron Paul is even worse than Hillary? That’s something I could agree with. Of course no one who is against Paul should care. He will get less than 2% in the primaries.
Anyone who blames America for terrorist hatred of America is an idiot. Anyone who would support someone for that, and even laud him for it is even more so one.

Has Fred announced he is officially running? Did I miss something. If not than this really is amazing. If they were told to vote on just the declared candidates and Fred won that is pretty good.

UH, perhaps it is because this was an NTU poll and Ron Paul has the best record on taxing and spending of any political figure in Washington D.C. No surprise here.

Doesn’t suprise me. The NTU folks are fiscal conservatives above all else. There is probably a disproportionately large number of libertarians among its membership.
Since Paul is fiscally coservative (the only really conservative thing about him), I can see how he would do well with the less than 17% of this group who voted for him.

The signifcant thing about this poll is that Fred polled almost as high as Rudy McRomeny all added together, LOL!
Very true. Ron Paul is like a student taking 4-5 courses and aces every course except one, foreign policy.
He’s a terribly smart man, honest with complete integrity. But he needs to talk to us about his Iraq views more because there is obviously a disconnect.
On Fiscal Conservatism, literally nobody has a better record than Paul. Ron Paul holds the National Taxpayer's Union record for being rated the #1 most Fiscally Conservative politician in all of Congress six years in a row, and has been rated either 1st or 2nd most Fiscally Conservative politician in Congress every year he has been in Congress except one (when he was 3rd).

On the Republican side, Fred Thompson’s record on spending puts the rest of the field to shame, and is even more conservative than that of Newt Gingrich. Perhaps Thompson’s supposed lack of accomplishments in the Senate are the result of a legislator who erred on the side of ensuring that government didn’t grow, didn’t spend more, didn’t meddle more in people’s lives, and generally left Americans alone. In an age of two big-governnment parties, it isn’t surprising that such a candidate is garnering interest.”

You use this as justification for Paul's cowardice? This was probably Reagan's single biggest mistake -- it encouraged further attacks on US forces and interests because it showed the Islamofascists that we had no stomach to actually fight them.
