So Thompson Isn't Reagan After All?

That didn't take long. Apparently all one needs to do to earn the ire of your political allies is to place second in a few national polls. Indeed, after an initial wave of glowing reviews and softball interviews, Fred Thompson has been getting thumped a bit in the conservative chorus.

George Will, writing in Newsweek the other day, asked: "If he did not look like a basset hound who had just read a sad story - say, 'Old Yeller' - and if he did not talk like central casting's idea of the god Sincerity, would anyone think he ought to be entrusted with the nation's nuclear arsenal?"

A few weeks earlier, Robert Novak, another hard-hitting conservative, criticized Thompson's flat delivery at the Lincoln Club of Orange County - "a let down for the packed audience of conservative Republicans." And just last week, having spent a leisurely half-hour with Sean Hannity the night before, Thompson was absolutely grilled by Larry Kudlow on the host's CNBC show for the former Tennessee senator's opposition to tort reform.

Few conservatives have gone for the criticisms coming from the left - the lobbying career; the closeness to Washington's elite circles; the defense of Scooter Libby - except to note that Thompson doesn't, in fact, drive himself around Tennessee in a red pick-up truck. (The truly vicious have even gone after him for marrying a much younger woman.)

And it seems that anyone who comments on Thompson has to make an obligatory reference to his reputation for laziness on the job. Jay Leno, for instance, wouldn't have mentioned it to Thompson Tuesday night if the notion hadn't already become part of the collective wisdom.

And yet one wonders: Wasn't Thompson's video skewering of Michael Moore a...

There will NEVER be another Ronald Reagan. There may be someone similar, and I DO believe Fred Thompson is similar, but there will never be another RWR. That said, I do support Thompson and see him as the most mature, most level-headed, most sommon-sensical candidate to come along since— well, Ronald Reagan.

I should have specified that I wasn’t necessarily just talking about you. If I incorrectly singled you out, I apologize. This thread has been full of whiney little sour grapes trolls just trying to inject their bile wherever they can.

I’ve never been a big Mary Matalin fan either. But she’s an unpaid ‘advisor’, which is fine with me. If she were running the campaign, that would be worrisome. She’s definitely got a good head on her shoulders though and could be an asset if needed.

I used to feel the same way, just so I could relax a bit about the election. But, now that I’m 100% sure that Fred is going to run, he can announce when he feels like it. Just as long as I know we’ve got a real candidate, I can sleep better. :)

Agreed on all counts. Fred is the first one to tell you he’s no Reagan. It’s the other candidates that are running around trying to claim they’re Reagan. As far as Fred is concerned, the Reagan comparisons are a media strawman.

“Now I find journalists even more dispicable but I still hate trial lawyers.”

We are on the same wave length.....might even have campaign slogan potential.

Will’s opinion means nothng to me, after a few years of reading his convuluted pieces on the war.

But, ACCORDING TO Mark Levin he’s a Rudy supporter. Everything he says needs to be read in that context now.

Novak’s CNN guy. Or was.

No one inspires faith in the American Dream the way Reagan did. But in one way I believe Thompson may even be stronger: in his commitment to federalism, and returning the Constitutional powers the federal government has usurped back to the states.

In short, I think Reagan was the right person for his times, and Thompson is the right person for these.

What concerns me about Fred is he’s hired so many Bush administration people.

What scares me is that so many support an ex-senator who supports supression of free speech as in McCain-Feingold.

Never.

Well, I’m not a protectionist myself, so no big thing to me. I think we have to compete head to head vs the world. We CAN do it. Not in every field, but we don’t have to. Lets use our advantages and win. The US is hugely productive, thats our strength, we’re not cheap, but that’s OK. Let the other guys take the low value add stuff. They can have it.

Screw Bork. He wasn’t that good. Better than some, not perfect by any means. He’s the kind of conservative who never heard of the 9th and 10 amendments.

Yes, you are of course correct. With the near revolt of the base, then there would be no Supreme Court justice Alito.

“If he did not look like a basset hound who had just read a sad story...”

LOL... I’m sorry, but that’s funny. Please, no one hate me, but I actually got a chuckle out of that one.

Anyway, Fred’s said many good things. But I really do need to see him in debate with the other candidates to really get a feel for the man and his leanings. Many of the candidates have exposed weaknesses or strengths in these debates, without meaning to, and I think that’s one of the primary benefits of being able to see a candidate in debate.

For example: My opinion of Ron Paul has changed dramatically, and not for the better. My opinion of Mitt Romney has improved dramatically. And my opinion of Rudy... well, it was already so low that it really had no where to go but up, and it didn’t.

Reagan was so seventies.

Wow, that's interesting.

Calling Reagan passé' and outdated whilst endorsing an ex-senator.

Didn't know the timestamp had expired.

George Will and Robert Novak are not representative of, well of, anyone actually.

Exactly. Whatever Fred Thompson is or isn't, these two should just keep the doors to their glass houses shut.
