Ottawa, ON (AHN) - A medical journal has reported a case of a one-week-old infant who died from complications after being circumcised in an unidentified hospital in Ontario, Canada.
In its April 2007 edition, Paediatrics and Child Health reported a case in which an infant, whose parents did not want him identified, was brought back to his family doctor by his parents 5 hours after he had been circumcised. At that time, his parents said he was "very irritable and had blue discoloration below the umbilicus when he cried." The baby's physicians sent the child home.
The baby's parents took him to another hospital 14 hours after his circumcision because he was still irritable and his penis was swollen. Dr. Jim Cairns, who is the deputy chief coroner in Ontario, said that at that time, doctors found the baby's bladder was "seven or eight times its normal size."
The baby boy subsequently died after going into septic shock, which Dr. Cairns said is "an overwhelming infection, leading to multi-organ failure."
Dr. Cairns, who became involved because the provincial coroner's office must review all deaths of all children younger than 5 in the province of Ontario, said that death is a rare complication of circumcision.

curious. was the baby muslim or jewish?
That almost sounds like it could be an umbilical infection. Of course, an infection would spread very quickly in an infant. The dr was negligent for sending him home, IMO.
I’m not muslim or Jewish but they still took the excess 25lbs.
There are also many many Christians and atheists circumcising their kids for medical or whatever reason.

My father was circumcised, at age 17, when he enlisted in the Navy during WWII.
He alway said, if I knew they were gonna do that I wouldn't have signed up.

If his bladder was full and he couldn't pee....wouldn't you think this would be a bigger risk to have a child die so quickly? Urine backing up into the ureters would shut down the kidneys..and would lead to a multi-organ failure. My guess is the Doc may have botched the circumcision and damaged the baby's urethra so he couldn't pee. But... all is speculation without seeing an autopsy report. How tragic for these parents......

I would venture a guess that most Jewish circumcisions are performed in a hospital in the US. Its the more religious that tend to schedule a Bris with a Mohel; many are quite content to use the delivering doctor.

Where I’m at, I’d say 90-95% of males are circumcised. It’s been shown to reduce the occurence of carcinoma of the penis to essentially nothing, to minimize the spread of STDs, and to prevent infection. Sounds like a good thing in my book.
