WASHINGTON - President Bush , trying to salvage an immigration overhaul legislation, endorsed a plan Thursday that would lock in money for border security as way to win over conservative lawmakers and a skeptical public.
Bush got behind a propos, , ) of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.
The provision would immediately divert $4.4 billion toward border security, with that amount to be paid back once new fees are in place. The point would be to ensure that border security would not be subject to the whims of the yearly budget negotiations.
With many questions unanswered, it was unclear how much of a concession the move amounts to for Bush.
A bipartisan group of senators crafted a fragile compromise on the immigration bill that Bush supports. But the deal is in deep trouble, because many Republicans oppose that it provides a way for millions of immigrants who entered the country illegally to become legal.
Bush said the bill emphasizes security by requiring tougher border and workplace measures before new options for immigrants and guest workers could begin. Already, he said, border agents are capturing and sending home huge numbers of people trying to cross illegally.
The legislation stalled last week when only seven GOP senators supported a Democratic bid to limit debate called a cloture vote and expedite a final vote.
"We feel confident there are going to be enough votes for cloture," he said.
Too little too late, Senor Presidente...you don't give a damn about "border security", just amnesty.
Hilarious!
Bush cannot be trusted on this. He lies, because he is against what is good for America.
Associated Pimps.
They’re lying.
If he gave a flying-F&*K about border security why would he use it as a hostage on the amnesty bill?
Man, I wish he would have fought this hard for permanent tax cuts or his judicial nominees!
By the way... NO DEAL!!
I don't like beggars! And I will not support your Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants ever!
I honestly believe he is doing what he thinks is good for America. Unfortunately, it’s a different America than the one you and I and most other citizens think of. Years ago, when Dems and Greens alike said Bush was nothing but a corporate stooge, I was willing to make excuses for him. Now it seems that they may have been right. Because the America Bush is trying to help is corporate America, and the citizenry be damned.
Sure it will.
And these measures will get stripped out in reconcilliation or ignored.
I have a better idea. Build the d@mn wall.
Mr President, or should I say El Presidente, we are not simple minded socialist liberals.
Throwing money at us isn’t going to change our minds.
Just build the fence... AND ENFORCE THE LAWS! When we see an improvement... maybe we'll listen to what the NEXT president has to offer.
Lock funds?
WRITE THE CHECK.
Pay it out of the Social Security funds if needed.
Mr. President, are you not a man of honor, Sir?
Please go and put on some clothes. You seem to be wearing nothing except a Sombrero.
Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, every one of them. No compromises...we’ve got to kill and bury this monster.
Hey JORGE, read my tagline.......
Rebublicans should have by now been in the position to dominate politics for a generation, instead, with Carter lite, we will be lucky if they have any significant presence at all after the next election cycle. I like Bush, I think he has character, but he has been way off on so many issues lately. Somebody check his meds!
While I agree he can’t be trusted on this, I don’t believe he’s ‘against America’ thats a bit over the top.
