CINCINNATI -- Nicole Brown is looking for an ally in her fight to lose weight. "I want to lose weight for a lifetime and be healthy for the future," she said.
She thought the new Food and Drug Administration-approved, over-the-counter drug Alli might be her answer.
"I was like, 'Wow, great, there is something that the FDA actually approved that we can take', so I'm assuming it's naturally healthy," Brown said.
Dr. Stephen Goldberg, who heads up Jewish Hospital's weight management program, said the drug is healthy, much more so than many of the diet drugs on the shelves today. But he said dieters must do their part, limiting their fat intake to 15 grams per meal -- or else.
"You would experience bloating, you would experience loose stools, the urgency to have a bowel movement. Some people would have accidents. In general, side effects that aren't very pleasant," Goldberg said.
But if used correctly, the drug's maker, Glaxo Smith Kline, claims you can lose up to 50 percent more weight than with dieting alone.
"It's not a miracle. You cannot lose 100 pounds on it," Goldberg said.
Meanwhile, Brown has decided to look elsewhere for help losing weight.
"It's not exactly what I'm looking for, not what I was excited about initially, because it's just another drug with a side effect," she said.
There currently are two FDA-approved prescription drugs for the long-term treatment of obesity: Meridia, an appetite suppressant, and Xenical, which limits the amount of fat the body can absorb. Sales of Alli, a lower-dose version of Xenical that won't require a prescription, start this week.
Is this what’s been used in Hollywood?
Hmm. We all know fat is the enemy of weight loss. So, Ms. Brown wants to lose weight AND consume more that 15g of fat in a meal. Nice self control.
This product works if you actually want TRY to lose weight.
She never did lose the weight. Curiously, I've lost 28 lbs over the past year by doing two things: eating less and exercising more. Simple, really.
Kind of sounds like Olestra. Remember that? The fat your body can’t absorb, so it goes right through you? I remember hearing about the side effects from that. I’d never heard the phrase “anal leakage” before. I thought “Wow... if I had to choose between being fat and being incontinent, I think I’d go with fat.”
It’s easier for me to eat healthy than less quantity.
Problem is, even with healthier foods I tend to eat huge portions.
Whenever I do low-carb, it works like a charm and I feel great. The down side, of course, is sooner or later I get bored and think, “God, would a toasted bagel with cream cheese taste good right now....” Then I fall off the wagon.
Damn! Costco starts selling it tomorrow! $65 for 150 tabs.
So it makes the fat go “right through” the person. This is not the solution.
A steak sounds good right now too!
My daughter was just showing me that old SNL ad on YouTube this morning. Hilarious.
Wow... a steak DOES sound good right now!! Hm....
I had almost a pound of delicious shrimp last night....it was soooo good.....and long overdue.
I now eat about a quarter of what I used to, and the extra padding just melted away. Granted, I've thrown myself into the sport of triathlon, but even with that you have to be careful with what and how you eat. A lot of endurance athletes think its open season on carbs and high calorie foods because they're running 40 miles a week. Its tricky fueling your workouts while trying to create a caloric debt.
Another thing is glycemic load. Once I switched to foods that were low or moderate on the index, the results were dramatic.
It’s like the drugs advertised on TV for agorophobia (fear of being out in public). It works, but the same sort of side effects, bad body odor, bad gas, sweats, etc. You can go out, but who’d want to be near you?
Yes. A mechanic who tried the Olestra potato chips described it as a "Blown Rear Main Seal".
By the way, just checked out your freep page. Excellent taste in music! South Park Repubs ROCK! And add me to any ping list you have. :-D
