WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, trying to salvage an immigration overhaul legislation, endorsed a plan Thursday that would lock in money for border security as way to win over conservative lawmakers and a skeptical public.
``We're going to show the American people that the promises in this bill will be kept,'' Bush said in a speech to the Associated Builders and Contractors.
Bush got behind a proposal to set aside money collected through fees and penalties for tougher border security and workplace enforcement. Two Republican senators, John Kyl of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.
Bush said the measure would ``show the American people that we're going to do our jobs of securing this border once and for all.''
The provision would immediately divert $4.4 billion toward border security, with that amount to be paid back once new fees are in place. The point would be to ensure that border security would not be subject to the whims of the yearly budget negotiations.

Fences First. Show me you can stop them, THEN we’ll talk about playing pattycake with the ones here.
WE DON’T BELIEVE YOU. SHOW US FIRST.
DON’T JUST PASS A BILL AND/OR APPROPRIATE MONEY. WE DON’T TRUST YOU TO FOLLOW THROUGH. CUT OFF THE INFLUX OF ILLEGALS FIRST. ENFORCE THE LAWS ON THE BOOKS. MAKE IT MANDATORY AND POSSIBLE FOR EMPLOYERS TO CONFIRM IDENTITY. MOST ILLEGALS WILL DEPORT THEMSELVES IF THEY CAN’T GET FREEBIES AND THE JOBS DRY UP.
THEN TALK TO US ABOUT AMNESTY.
Bush Pledges Tougher Border Security.....
Hey J.O., you’re about 6 years too late!
Bush “endoresed a plan.” Kyl and Graham “have proposed such an amendment.” This is more of the same. Promises, promises, if you’ll do what we want, and then down the road, nada. This PROPOSED amendment is going to be used to lure senators or give them cover to vote to bring the bill to the floor. Once they’ve gotten it to the floor, there is no way they can guarantee it will be in the final bill. Bait and switch at its finest.
But Mr. President, you were saying the immigration bill would be sufficient to secure our borders BEFORE this proposed security funding bill.
So were you lying to us before?
And if that is the case, why should we believe you now?
Four words, Mr. President.
I. Don’t. Believe. You.
I could list the falsehoods and outright lies that have come from the president over the years, but I don’t have all day to type.

President uses law's escape clause to drop funding for new homeland security force.
From 2005:
Washington -- The law signed by President Bush less than two months ago to add thousands of border patrol agents along the U.S.-Mexico border has crashed into the reality of Bush's austere federal budget proposal, officials said Tuesday.
Officially approved by Bush on Dec. 17 after extensive bickering in Congress, the National Intelligence Reform Act included the requirement to add 10,000 border patrol agents in the five years beginning with 2006. Roughly 80 percent of the agents were to patrol the southern U.S. border from Texas to California, along which thousands of people cross into the United States illegally every year.
But Bush's proposed 2006 budget, revealed Monday, funds only 210 new border agents.
We don't believe you!
Key Senators to call:
McConnell 202/224-2541
Lott 202/224-6253
Kyl 202/224-4521
Brownback 202/224-6521
Burr 202/224-3154
Chambliss 202/224-3521
Cornyn 202/224-2934
Hutchison 202/224-5922
“Basically he said we should allow them to do what they want and then well have a chance to verify that they were telling the truth. The only problem is that once its done its done and if theyre lying (they are) there wont be anything we can do about it.”
You are right. Why give them the chance to screw us up even more. Don’t give an inch.
Words. We’ve heard ‘em.
Action now!
You could be right. I was thinking of Chambliss's proposal to secure funding for border security as a separate bill, to be passed first, but since this is the turncoats Kyl and Graham, that must not be it.
Hey, you calling us rats??
Only the suckers who stick around. It's like being a dumb slut who gets used, abused & put away wet. Haven't you seen any of the threads discussing how to get in on the racket & skedaddle?
Ya think the upper classes who live behind gated walls in Mexico City, Lima, et al get hosed? Hardly.
Bush, Kyl & Graham? With those stellar endorsements, it's got to be legit!
why aren’t the dems hyping Impeachment now? they could get alot support from our side if they make it about not securing the country. oh wait, they want to wait until he makes them legal then they will impeach him over 9/11 or some other hairbrained thing.
I don’t think there is any question this is
Bush’s “No new taxes moment.”
For 6 yrs he has sat back while the majority
of people have been screaming about Border
Security and this is his idea which insults
his base with what it should entail -
Amnesty and then Boarder Security?
Protect the border.
Hit employers of illegals hard.
Deport illegals.
Pass a law, amendment, or whatever is needed so that someone doesn't become a citizen just because they were born on American soil.
Make the process to become a legal citizen quicker and easier for those without criminal records who this country needs.
