INHOFE PRAISES IMMIGRATION BILL’S DEFEAT

June 8, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today lauded the defeat of the 2007 Immigration Reform bill (S.1348) after several cloture votes failed to pass the Senate.

“Though the Immigration Reform legislation was officially pulled from consideration in the Senate Thursday night, the bill was dead long before then. The chance to create meaningful immigration reform legislation was lost the moment the bill emerged from its closed-door meeting with an immediate path to amnesty for anywhere from 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants. As I’ve said before, it is an injustice to those immigrants who have gone about the citizenship process legally to grant these illegal immigrants a shortcut to citizenship.

“This legislation was substantively and procedurally flawed from the beginning. The bill did not undergo the normal legislative process, but instead we were expected to vote on a bill that members did not have a chance to review until two days before floor consideration. The Democratic leadership also refused to allow consideration of dozens of Republican amendments. Though my amendment to make English the national language was successful and passed the Senate by a wide bi-partisan majority, many amendments that could have positively impacted the overall bill were never allowed floor-time.

“The first step in any significant immigration legislation must be to secure our borders. The Senate bill focused far too much on controversial and irresponsible programs such as the ‘Z-visa,’ and far too little on ensuring that our borders are no longer porous. It is time that we deal with real immigration reform beginning with border security.

“Thankfully, Americans of all stripes weighed in on this issue, influencing Congressional opinions and helping defeat this bill. It is clear that in the future we must deal with the issue of illegal immigration without a path to amnesty and by securing our borders.”

Immigration

Securing America’s porous borders and controlling illegal immigration are two of the most important issues for the future of our country. That is why I recently introduced the ENFORCE Act of 2007 (S.1269) to increase criminal penalties for first-time illegal entry, increase the number of agents available to police the border and establish criminal penalties for forging federal documents.

The ENFORCE Act is a real solution to ending illegal immigration by strengthening our borders through the formation of the National Border Neighborhood Watch (NBNW) Program (modeled after the National Neighborhood Watch Program) allowing retired federal law enforcement officers (currently forced to retire at 57) to come back and volunteer with the U.S. Border Patrol.

I am also working to end the practice of granting citizenship privileges to children—often referred to as “Anchor Babies”—who are born in the US to illegal aliens. Additionally, I am working to end the practice of allowing aliens to collect Social Security benefits once they gain legal status for the time they worked illegally in the U.S. Finally, I am fighting proposals to grant amnesty to illegal aliens.

Recently I put up a thread about calling to have Sen Inhofe's bill ENFORCE heard in the Judiciary Committee. You can view that thread here:

Sen Inhofe ENFORCE Bill thread

We need your help and we need it now to call your two Senators especially the members of the Judiciary committee to ask them to hear Sen Inhofe's bill ENFORCE. Let the two bills compete on the floor of the Senate and allow the American people to hear what Senator Inhofe's bill has to say. Will bet that any thinking American who puts America first will want Sen Inhofe's bill not the travesty of a bill being pushed by President Bush and Karl Rove. Will post the contact info for Judiciary below.

Who is going to foot the bill for the local new schools, jails/prisons (which 6% of them will require), welfare, food stamps, medic-aid and SS disiability for the ‘extended families’ of the current crop of illegals...neither Mitch McConnell office nor Sen Lamar Alexander’s office could answer the question. But we know, we the US citizens will foot the bill with increased property, state and local tax increases.

Thanks for the pings. We need everyone working together on this one. This is for the security of our Country and we cannot allow the bill being pushed by the President to see victory. I am a long time Bush person back to 1994 but I draw the line on this one.

We need every last person on here no matter who they support to call and ask each Senator on Judiciary to hear the Inhofe bill ENFORCE. We are Americans first and that needs to override any differences we may have had in the past and all get behind this together. Don’t care if you are a Republican, an Indy, a Dem, a Lib, Constitution Party or whatever — get behind the Inhofe bill and tell your Senators to defeat the President’s Bill and hear the Inhofe bill.

Thanks,

Sharon

Members of Senate Judiciary Committee -- please contact today:

Fax a Senator for FREE from the WEB. You don't even need to get up from your computer! Three steps:

1. Don't know who to fax? Here is a list of GOP Senators being targeted by the pro-amnesty crowd to flip.

2. Need a fax number? Go to http://www.grassfire.org/19042/targets.htm (Ignore the prices, you are just after the fax numbers).

3. Fax for free from the Web. Put your message in the text box. Go to http://faxzero.com/

That's it. You're done.

I faxed Mitch McConnell the following:

Security first, Senator! Please do not betray your country! We do not want this bill.

You can also email them from a webform here. This site also has their office phone numbers.

I thought was dead when I read this from Sen Inhofe when this was written but they brought it back to life thanks to lobbying by Karl Rove twisting arms and the President going to the Senate this week.

We are lucky to have Senators Coburn and Inhofe! Wish there were a lot more like them in the Senate.

It is pretty bad when Senator Inhofe thought this bill was dead and now it is coming back. That means backdoor deals are being cut and I find that disgusting. I don’t understand why this lenghy bill with loopholes you can drive a Mack through would see the light of day again. It should have been killed once and for all.

The President won’t even consider Sen Inhofe’s bill and from what I hear Rove has been twisting arms. Why are we still paying his salary when he is nothing but a political henchman? Can you tell I am disgusted.
