Steve Powers, who just retired after 45 years as a New York radio and TV newsman, has seen a whole lot of changes in the news game since he was a young reporter meeting President John F. Kennedy in the White House Rose Garden.....
snip- AIR AMERICA CUTS NEWS: The progressive network Air America is eliminating its news service at the end of June.
The decision was "based solely on economics," according to a staff memo from COO Scott Elberg. "We spent the last three months looking at all the options," his memo said. "In the end, it didn't work."
Air America, heard locally on WWRL (1600 AM), was bought out of bankruptcy this year by Stephen L. Green, who pledged to run it with fiscal responsibility.

The progressive network Air America is eliminating its news service at the end of June. The decision was "based solely on economics," according to a staff memo from COO Scott Elberg.Economics is right. Economics based solely on the fact nobody was listening!
Sort of like saying the Edsel was pulled from the market "based solely on economics".
Name a dismal business failure that isn't closed down "based solely on economics"!
They should have hired Baghdad Bob to release this story. He would have announced a major expansion of the station into new markets!
AAR has several divisions. The only ones I ever tune into (I have a fiance who fits her chinese stereotype sometimes) are Prarie Home Companion and classical music.
I think she listens to some of their other programs, but she promises it goes off when they start getting *to* political (or during said news program)
Sort of like the Don Herbert's death, who knew he was still alive?.
Comment:
Isn’t that what got old Dan Blather in trouble.
He must really feel humiliated that cBS brought in an airhead like Perky Katie to take his lying place.
Don’t these people at Airhead America know that liberal don’t listen to the news.
If they did and became informed they would not vote for Democrats.
After continually losing affiliates the latest big news for them is a possible sign up of 6 or 7, but the question is,
where? tiny little AM signals in tiny villages?
Meanwhile the lib radio blog http://ltradio.blogspot.com is
criticizing Murdoch (”Death of a Newspaper”) and Fox, again:
>>Will a News Corp-controlled WSJ resemble screaming tabloids like the New York Post or trashy London rags like The Sun or News Of The World?
>>In another sign that Murdoch is dead serious about his pursuit of Dow Jones is today’s announcement by News Corp that they are selling off nine of their TV stations, all of which carry the FOX Network (the “American Idol” one, not the “American Idiot” one).
>>News Corp has succeeded partly due to shrewd business moves (the broadcast network was a massive success), but mostly due to the obscene amount of money thrown around.
OMg, Ok, ignore my ast post- NPR, not AAR... I get all these talking heads confused. I dont think I could find AAR on a radio if my life depended on it, lol.
If they couldn't make it run by robbing children's funds, it will fail even faster with fiscal responsibility.
I hear Peter Arnett is available!!!
Having grown up just down the road from Lake Woebegone, I would occasionally tune in, too. I can assure you that Rush Limbaugh has more original content in one three hour program than Prairie Home Companion has in three years. Except for the guest artists, Prairie Home Companion has identical shows every time. Why don't you just play an eight track tape of "We're all Republicans Now" whenever you feel the urge for left wing propaganda?
I thought “A Prairie Home Companion” was mostly carried on NPR stations.
Was looking at the comments at that link.

Hendrie is still on the air? I thought he was dropped nationally after most of his listeners dropped him due to his nasty bullying in favor of the Shrub’s dirty war.
A lefty shows up for a duel of wits unarmed as they always do. Phil Hendrie left to do some acting and it seemed he was also tired of radio at that time.
BTW, he’s back.

Yeah, I noted my mistake earlier. LOL, I confused one mouth of liberalism for another.
“My bad!”
New York Times loses another subsciber.

No need to go to the link as it’s a lib site but the gist is that Air America Radio is adding a new show, “Go Vegan with Bob Linden” the weekend of June 30. They call it the “first animal rights and vegan program in commercial radio.” The article goes on to make a plea for donations.
They’re saved. I was wondering how they were going to do it and here’s the answer. /extreme sarcasm. I suppose they’re going to try silent movies next. Hold on. Isn’t a show supposed to be on the air before they go on the PBS beg for donations route? I thought the bailout solved all of their money problems.
I didn’t know if I wanted to post this as it looked too silly but when I saw the plea for cash it became comedy gold. This new show should please their listener. They better hope he’s not on vacation that weekend.
I thought A Prairie Home Companion was mostly carried on NPR stations.
I can’t stand listening to that sniveling POS Garrison Keillor. He is arrogant, rude, and treats people like crap - that I heard from a liberal who used to work on the set of Prairie Home Companion. And yes, Keillor goes into his rabid “hate Bush” rants on the air (did you forget your meds Garrison?). Just confirms that a person needs to have a full blown case of Bush Derangement Syndrome to be a true Minnesotan.
I hate Minnesota. I just work here.
The article goes on to make a plea for donations.
This is supposed to be a commercial network, and they make pleas for donations and memberships! That is one hell of a business model!
