Immigrants try to revive stalled bill

By JULIANA BARBASSA -- Associated Press Writer (Published: June 13, 2007)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) As President Bush pressed lawmakers to get immigration reform back on track, immigrants across the country were marching, praying, writing lawmakers and hitting the road for Washington in a desperate push to revive the stalled measure.

Before the bill collapsed in the Senate last week, most immigrants agreed it was flawed. But seeing a rare opportunity for change slipping away - and recognizing it may not come again for years - many insisted they wouldn't let it go without a fight.

The immigrants' rallying cry echoed the president's comment Tuesday to divided Republicans: "The status quo is unacceptable."

"There was a lot of frustration that politics got in the way of sound, necessary public policy," said Jerry Gonzalez of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, a statewide organization whose 4,000 members are calling their senators seeking reforms. "The time is now. They need to act. They have to."

A caravan departed Wednesday from Los Angeles after a prayer from Roman Catholic Cardinal Roger Mahony, a longtime supporter of immigrant rights. Renan "El Cucuy" Almendarez Coello, a popular Spanish-language radio host, also was on hand to send off the "Dreams Across America" caravan.

"We have all come for the American dream," Coello said. "Go for it!"

Organized by the Catholic Church, unions and community groups, the caravan included several dozen legal immigrants who will cross the country by train while making stops to tell their stories. The trip was scheduled to finish June 19 in Washington.

"I came here and started from scratch," said Jules Boyele, 40, who fled civil war in his native Congo 17 year

If they are marching, I think that would be a great place to arrest and then deport them....then they could pray on the way back to Mexico, and write letters while on the bus.
No loose for them.

We cockroaches have rights, and we demand to be allowed to come out of the woodwork!

God this is really beginning to piss me off.

I don’t have a problem with legal immigrants but I have a huge problem with the illegal ones. I am tired of various church groups defending the illegals — they are breaking the law and should not have any rights except a one-way ticket back to the Country they are from.

If illegals are going to demonstrate, then INS better be prepared to round them up.

Illegal Aliens have no standing to protest anything in this country.

Illegal Aliens do not have the money to payoff the politicians, they should leave it to their corporate masters to do it.

We need to aprise USCIS of the positions of these caravans so trained eyes can keep a watch. USCIS and IRS could also benefit by a complaint made against one or more of these church groups for taking a political stand....

So do what John McCain suggested you might do and riot.

It is not just the Dems who are passing the most outrageous amendments to the “I bomb” legislation. The gang of seven traitor RINOs have helped the Dems pass close votes.

According today to Roy Beck of Numbers USA:

Senator Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Senate Republican Whip Trent Lott of Mississippi have succeeded in twisting nearly enough GOP arms to assure Sen Ted Kennedy that they can deliver the votes to pass his S1348 amnesty for 12-20 million illegal aliens.

CALL YOUR SENATORS IN D.C. 202-224-3121 TODAY, TONIGHT, OR EMAIL THEM ALL NIGHT LONG!!

EXPOSE AND CHALLENGE THE LIES THAT POLLS SHOW AMERICANS SUPPORT THIS AMNESTY!

Thank you.

"Immigrants, or ILLEGALS????!"

Well if they stay illegally I guess that would be illegal immigrant. I don't think I'm coining a new term though.

How nice!! Illegals trying to write the laws of our country. They are NOT immigrants!!

I just can't figure out why they don't go home to their sewer of a country and make it a place they can be proud of!

I see that the President’s rating is down today to under 30%. Same for the Congress. Dah...what would you expect from these out of touch and out of control politicians?

The cost to our great union will be the downfall of our heritage.

" immigrants across the country were marching"

WRONG !

Immigrants are legal foreign people seeking to assimilate into the United States.

These are CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ENTRANTS, and should be a target-rich environment for ICE, if the existing law were enforced!

I got a call from the RNC today. He got an earful! I told them to take my name of their list. George Bush et al have sold us out by cutting amnesty deals with Kennedy.

I also told him if McCain, Graham, etc., are on the ‘08 ticket I’ll stay home.

>I told him if McCain, Graham, etc., are on the 08 ticket I’ll stay home.<

Much as I know you meant that to be a threat, I think they are shooting for a one party system in America. One party=total control=one world government=New World Order=Goodbye Land of the Free!

The only thing I can think of that would be a threat would be if ALL Americans refused to pay their income taxes. Doubt if there is jail space enough for 300,000,000 people.

I guess that is the best thing to do: call, call, call our senator. Let’s also call Democrats who may be swayed. Or who may become less enthusiastic about this crazy bill. Teddy is a lost cause.
