A strong majority of Americans including nearly two-thirds of Republicans favors allowing illegal immigrants to become citizens if they pay fines, learn English and meet other requirements, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.
That is a striking show of support for the central tenet of legislation that has stalled in the Senate amid vocal opposition from conservatives to provisions allowing such a path to citizenship.
Only 23% of adults surveyed opposed allowing immigrants to become legal. That bolsters the view, shared by President Bush, that the bill's opponents represent a vocal minority, whereas most people are more welcoming toward illegal immigrants.
"They are willing to take jobs that our people aren't interested in, and I think this helps the economy," Joseph Simpkins, a retired dry cleaner in New Jersey who participated in the survey, said in a follow-up interview. "As long as they pay taxes, I see nothing wrong with having them become citizens

The survey question specified that, under the proposal, citizenship would be available only to those who register their presence in the U.S., have no criminal record, pay a fine, get fingerprinted and learn English, among other requirements.

What makes the L.A. Slimes believe that illegals are even remotely interested in becoming citizens?
They come here to make triple or quadruple what they were making back home. They want to work, send money home, save a bunch up, and go home after a few years of leeching off our system, and live an upper-middle class lifestyle.
That’s why they have zero desire to learn English or assimilate; it’s also why they won’t want to pay fines and jump through all the hoops of the bill. As long as there’s no real border security and no real employer enforcement, there is no incentive for illegals to change their standard operating procedure.
I think the "strong majority" is made of of people named Jose, Maria, Pablo, Miguel, etc. I am very skeptical that most Americans want the mobs of illegals here! They want the laws enforced and the illegals deported!
LA Times? They wouldn’t be biased, would they? Nahhhhhh.
I wonder if most Americans favor this ?

BS - 1. They all broke the law coming here in the first place.
2. If passed all it does is set up the next wave of illegals and the next and the next.
I favor the Eisenhower option.
Back in the 60’s and 70’s I lived and worked in multiple countries in Asia, the ME and Europe - the thought of even overstaying my visas never entered my mind.
How many illegal aliens were in the sample?
This American says seal the border first, once done, then we can talk about the rest.
Last polls I saw was 72-76 against the Senate bill. 80%+ want the border secure first.
But I guess if you ran the same poll in LA, this is what you would expect.
Broken Federal Immigration laws, broken Federal Employment laws, committed fraud in securing work illegally.
By definition, any illegal alien living and working in this country is a criminal.
I don’t believe this poll. Consider the source.
And I did a poll in Mexico, and 91.5% of those polled said you can keep those Mexicans.
You’re correct!
But you forgot one thing: If they become legal, and employers have to start paying for all the things legal employees require, ( like workers comp insurance, 15% FICA, etc. ) they have lost their attractiveness to the employer.
The employer will then go looking for someone else to work “off the books”.
I think the whole premise that this will get them to “come out of the shadows” is false.

They have no idea who the hell these people are let alone if they’re felons. Where? Mexico? What a joke.
what i really want to know is how many faxes,eMails, letters and phone calls have been received to-date—stating -no— to this shamnesty plan.
Horsefeathers. I ain’t buyin’ it, no matter how hard they try and sell this pig in a poke.
A LA Weekly columnist outed the LA Times for running doctored /phony polls during the Davis recall and Arnold election. So , LA Times knows only how to generate phony polls.
Figures never lie, but liars manufacture polls.
Here’s a poll for you: The latest poll shows that 76% of Americans OPPOSE this Immigration Amnesty bill, therefore obviously crossing party, gender, racial, etc. lines ...
ya think?
