Berkeley High remains the only high school in the nation that has failed to comply with the military's request for students' data, a Department of Defense spokesman said.
A month ago, the school -- under pressure from the government to release the data or lose funding -- changed its policy that blocked the release of students' personal information. The new policy allows students and parents who do not wish to be contacted by military recruiters to opt out by signing a form.
But the school did not immediately release the data to the government. Instead, a group of parents have been on a campaign to ask each and every student whether they want to opt out.
Thus far, 90 percent of the students at Berkeley High have refused to have their names released to miliary recruiters.
Berkeley High risked losing $10 million in federal funding, and possibly faced legal action, if it did not change its policy regarding military recruitment.

I don't care if it's Berkeley - they need to be made an example of. Shut them down. Fire them for insubordination, and place every single one of the treasonous bastards under arrest. Now.
You certainly don't, sweetie.
It all comes down to the money.
Seems to me that the oath most teachers take to get their jobs should prevent their activism against their host country...
If the school district is so particular about releasing student information what in the H*** are they doing telling parent volunteers who the students are that haven't signed the opt out form?
Sorry, I have to agree with them. I certainly wouldn’t want all my personal information handed over to military recruiters.
Frankly, I commend the school district for acting to protect its students personal information.
Flame away.
Could that be a function of a California public school education?
Cowards. My two sons served in Iraq in place of cowards?
Un-American communists. Freedom isn’t free.
A fair point that deserves investigation.
No flames here, I agree.
Don’t confuse the ones who opt out with those willing to be contacted.
There is an over-and-above effort here to intimidate/shame/coerce/scare them ALL to opt out.
Also note the level of activism here, versus the level of due diligence for parental consent of sex education, abortion, etc.
I would venture a guess here...
That these are really the type of young people I do not want serving along side the young folks who are volunteering to serve...
I believe if this is the “last” school...I believe we have enough young and very capable folks that would serve if asked...And I would believe we won’t have to ask if it ever came to that...
What would these people fight for, if anything?
1. The schools receive large amounts of federal money
2. The schools receive protection from the federal government
3. But the schools refuse to allow the federal government access to the names of the students they are paying to educate and protect...
4. And heaven forbid that the school would consider any of the students would want to serve in the military.
Drug legalization maybe?
The right to hold disruptive protests?
The right to slander and libel those they oppose with impunity?
Liberals don't usually tend to be real pacifists. They just get caught up in the idea of rebelling against authority. That and fighting against the evils of corporations and capitalism.
I’m with you. I won’t give my personal information out to anyone(especially the government)-why would I give out my sons? If he wishes to join the military it isn’t hard to find out info about any of the branches, and he can initiate contact with them.
I also don’t think schools should give out personal info to colleges either. We should protect out privacy and personal information every chance that we get.
And they are for freedom of speech until their side is challenged.
No flame necessary. Unless you are still in high school, the military already has your information.
Questions to anyone: 1.)How is a sovereign nation to remain sovereign if it's government doesn't have the names and information of people to recruit or draft for military service to defend the nation? 2.)Are there any nations that do not compile such information?
