1st Priority: Kill this Bill once and for all.
2nd Priority: Secure the Border by whatever means necessary.
3rd Priority: Show citizens real examples of attempts to enforce current laws and find the bottlenecks/problems with resources, etc.. Review existing studies and ACT on the recommendations.
4th Priority: Hold Congress accountable to preserve National Security first, while allowing for civil and humane ways to deal with those here illegally. That’s the nicest way I can possibly postulate.

You are mostly correct. When a social security number comes back as a no match the employer has to notify the employee and tell them to go to the social security office to get the matter straighten out. The letter the employer receives specifically states that NO adverse actions may be taken against the employee. It is up to the employee and social security to straighten out the matter. Then he is to report back to the employer if the number was entered wrong....etc.
Basically the employer is just trying to protect himself from the fraudulent employee and the government, but can not decide who is telling the truth. The government is truly dubious in this as they could investigate this person immediately as they know where they work and live at this point. They are the ones responsible not the employer who many times are just trying to obey the law.

Title III contains the details of the promised crack-down on employers employing illegal aliens.
Title III has teeth. “Big pointy teeth that could mangle a man in a minute” as was said of the Killer Rabbit in Monty Python and The Holy Grail.
Section 302(e) (p. 116 of the draft released Friday night at just before midnight) spells out that each instance of hiring or continuing to employ an unauthorized alien will cost the employer $5,000. Employers previously fined for doing so fork over $25K per illegal alien, and three-strikers get hit for $75K each.
There are also record keeping violations of $1,000 per violation, which will send a shudder down the backs of honest employers who work hard to jeep the illegal aliens out of their workforce but who recognize in paperwork compliance penalties the ultimate blackjack for an out-of-temper bureaucrat.
Criminal penalties are available under 302(f) (p. 122) for employers engaging in a “pattern or practice of knowing violations.”

It’s not that I like the bill, I am challenging the hyperbole.
Enforce the laws, keep making raids and deporting, soon a very good portion of the illegals will get out of Dodge by themselves.
What is so unique about these promises the I should believe they will be kept?

Plus, we need to enforce the Border.
Most illegals will deport on their own when we take in the Welcome mat and make it uncomfortable for them to live here ILLEGALLY.

I agree that the edits would put some spine in it.
However, do we really need more legislation to enforce existing laws?
We have new (last year), legislation for some fence, where is that?
I don't trust that any new legislation will be administered any differently.
How would you find the money they send? Unless they are doing wire transfers, it’s pretty difficult to put a barrier on the flow of money.
Would the mail get opened? I am not being cynical, I worked in financial services a long time.
When a check hits the paying bank, it’s done first as a transaction registered either through a clearing corp or a fed money bank. The paying bank receives the check later and unless the check is an endorsement forgery, has no legal claim to go back to the person paid to reclaim the money as the allowable time to contest the payment will have been exceeded, which if I recall correctly is 48 hours from when the check has been presented.
I really don’t know how it could be done.
It’s probable that it won’t make it to the Senate floor again this term, unless Ted Kennedy wants to give in more to the R’s. I don’t think that’s likely.
We can’t know what will happen in the new Congress (and new Chief Executive) and that’s a risk that we have to deal with.
What is fair to say is that at this point, there’s not a sufficient legislative support for an enforcement only bill.
I read through your very long post, and I think you missed one very important point: the importance of this issue to many conservatives. For many, many conservatives the preservation of our national identity is just as important as infanticide is to you. It is their ‘pick-up-my-marbles-and-walk-away’ issue. Their nightmares are being realized right now. You shouldn’t be surprised that they’re failing to be completely polite about it.

Is it frustrating that he’s not enforcing the laws on immigration as we would like? Yes.
Is it a good practice to question Ted Kennedy? Yes.
Is it good to be vulnerable to what happens in 2009? Probably not.
