US President George W. Bush was confident Monday that the most sweeping overhaul of US immigration laws in two decades will ultimately clear Congress once he gets home from his European tour.
Speaking in Bulgaria's capital Sofia, Bush acknowledged disappointment that the legislation -- aimed at bringing 12 million illegal immigrants out of the shadows -- collapsed Thursday in the Democratic-controlled Congress.
"Listen, the immigration debate is a tough debate. I'm under no illusions about how hard it is," he told a news conference.
"There are people in my (Republican) party that don't want a comprehensive bill. There are people in the Democrat Party that don't seem to want a comprehensive bill."
But he said that he would, upon his return to Washington, get in touch with leading Democrats and Republicans who do support the legislation to get it firmly back on track.
"I'll be going to the Senate to talk about a way forward on the piece of legislation," he said.
"I'm going to work with those who are focused on getting an immigration bill done and start taking some steps forward again. I believe we can get it done. I'll see you at the bill signing."
Harry Reid, the Democratic leader of the Senate, withdrew the bill Thursday after senators, seeking to add amendments, voted twice within nine hours not to move it towards a final vote as he had demanded.
Billed as a "grand bargain," the proposed law would grant a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants, establishing a merit-based points system for future immigrants, and create a low-wage temporary worker program.
It also envisions a border security crackdown, punishment for employers who hire illegal immigrants and an attempt to wipe out a backlog of visa applications from those who have gone through legal channels.
Bush, who has made immigration reform a top priority of his second presidential term, is due to attend a Senate Republican policy lunch on Tuesday following his trip to Europe.
Only when the Bush/Kennedy/Feinstein/Boxer families' exclusive properties are in danger of being laid a finger on by an illegal alien will the sentiment towards them turn from 'poor tired and huddled masses, yearning to breathe free' to 'where did all these mother%^&ing MEXICANS come from, huh?!?'.
Hey, wait. That gives me an idea...
Interesting. Just today I received an email from a friend in White Plains, NY detailing his angst over the impact illegal immigrants are having on the middle-class in town.
It’s so bad he’s ready to leave.
I told him to scratch off California from his list of possible places to flee to.
My advice: Kearney, Nebraska
Your prescription is exactly what was done by “conservatives” and what led to the debacle of the mid-20th Century... when the full Congress was exclusively Democrat for many decades. As a result, this country adopted many socialist programs since a sufficient number of “pure conservatives” were not able to be elected to slow that juggernaut.
It took Goldwater and later Reagan to come along and learn to live with incrementalism: to overcome the foolishness of the ideologues like yourself... who would work with shifting coalitions of more conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans to slowly roll back some of what had done.
If purists continue on the path you suggest, we will again see a Congress like the mid-20th Congress - that is FAR more probable an outcome than that America will elect “Constitution Party candidates”, or even that it will elect a Congress controlled by “conservative Republicans” in the forseeable future. You simply can not wish away the FACT that conservatives DO NOT WIN elections in the NorthEast, and that conservatives do not have sufficient Congressional power to overcome that fact. I wish that were not true, but that IS the fact. It is related why the Constitution Party has so little support in this country. Exactly WHY is the “Constitution Party” so popular? You need to evaluate this honestly!
For that reason, I call you, and those like you, a Hitlery supporter - because as a result of the “wonderful ideological purity” strategy pursued successfully by the “conservatives”, we have weakened the cause of conservatism - as the FACT that this effort at legalizing illegals in this more liberal Congress as opposed to the more Republican Congress of the last six years demonstrates.
I hope not much more damage is done before we can correct it... but replacing NE Republicans with Demodogs is the wrong strategy to follow.
Sorry about the truth: I know it hurts.
PS: I couldn’t care less about “Fred” or any of the other candidates now - presidential politics is not high on my priorities yet. When next year rolls around, I will do exactly as I outlined in my earlier posts this thread: vote in the primary for the most conservative Republican I judge has a good chance to win the general, and work my tail off for him - yes, even in the unlikely chance that person is Rudy (on the safe assumption that the Demodogs don’t nominate some one like Zell Miller...)
The sooner the better!!! Let them feel what "people power" is and begin to respect it!!!
Nope what happened wasn't the fault of conservatives but of Marxist who took over our education system while we were fighting WW2. It's called Political Correctness or Cultural Marxism. It's rampant both in the Democratic Party and the liberal side of the GOP as well.
There would not have been a POTUS Reagan without the help of Conservatives both Dem and GOP United to a common cause grassroots conservative movement led by about 4 men. Of course even the name Paul Weyrich makes the Liberal RINO's scream foul it seems.
Ronald Reagan proved to the nation Conservatism works. In 1994 the American People in a record number chose Conservatism by electing a majority GOP in both house who ran conservative.. It was when they sold out by 1996 the real problems began. You can make all the excuses for them you wish the nation and the GOP base rejected Bob Liberal Dole and his two N.E. Liberal shill who ran the convention which gave Bill Clinton a second term.
How come New Hampshire is one of the first states to begin a Free State movement then? Of course when Bubba Bush pushes off ones like long time family friends Sunu in the north east well of course Liberals are forever. Bush is wrecking the GOP. If you will work for Rudy that tell me you too are a RINO LIBERAL willing to do whatever Master Liberal who owns the party says. Well not me.
