FairTax plan is worth more than a sound bite By Scott Burns

June 10, 2007

[Snip]As I approach the campus I see another kind of sign. It's for an idea, not a candidate. The signs say "FairTax."[Snip]

[Snip]The dilemma of our young -- Generation Debt, as one writer calls it -- is mentioned only in relation to education loans.[Snip]

[Snip]Here are the main elements:
[Snip]A national initiative much like state referendums to allow Americans to bypass Congress and vote on federal issues, sometimes called the "Let the people decide" movement.[Snip]

[Snip]The FairTax, which would eliminate the wretched tax system we now have and replace it with a single national sales tax. It would be supplemented with a rebate to reduce the burden of the tax on lower-income households. It would draw new revenue from wealthy people who spend their capital on consumption.[Snip]

[Snip]A Social Security fund invested in a low-cost global index fund, not IOUs, which would work as well for young people as for older people.[Snip]

[Snip]Universal health care vouchers that would guarantee healthcare to all Americans while putting the choice of how it is received back in the hands of the individuals who receive the care.[Snip]

I am thrilled that Scott Burns moved to Dallas many years ago. His stories about selling his home and the differences between Taxachusettes and Texas were enough to keep me from taking a job just outside of Boston. Would have been great for the family, but lousy compared to living in Texas.

I would be interested in a fair tax if only to remove the IRS from the lives of individuals. They could spend their time beating up on corporations that hire illegals and auditing congressmen.

I am not sure about health care vouchers, but if Scott has reviewed it then it is worth considering. Getting the Gov’t out of health care would be an asset to be considered.

Being named ‘fair tax’ will only allow Democrats to make up reasons to be against it,
should be called what it is, a consumption tax.
Next, Republicans best just go for a 7% flat tax, at a specified rate,
‘tax cuts’ is unclear terminology.
