Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday he favors immediately closing the Guantánamo Bay military prison and moving its detainees to U.S. facilities. The prison, which now holds about 385 war-on-terror captives, has tarnished the world's perception of the United States, Powell said.
''If it was up to me, I would close Guantánamo. Not tomorrow, but this afternoon. I'd close it,'' he said.
''And I would not let any of those people go,'' he said. ``I would simply move them to the United States and put them into our federal legal system. The concern was, well then they'll have access to lawyers, then they'll have access to writs of habeas corpus. So what? Let them. Isn't that what our system is all about?''
Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said Congress and the Bush administration should work together to allow imprisonment of some of the more dangerous detainees elsewhere so the military camp at the remote U.S. Navy base in Cuba can be closed.
The Defense Department estimates it would take about three years to conduct 60 to 80 military trials, if the administration authorizes that many.

Mark Steyn?
Mark Levin is gonna make hamburger out of Colin Powell. LMAO
Of course none of that would happen in the future. Any commander worth his salt would say that capturing prisoners results in too severe a degradation in fighting effectiveness. Therefore, we can no longer take prisoners. All these bleeding-heart liberals who are dying to heap rights onto these scum will face the law of unintended consequences. The people they're trying to protect will be killed instead. 72 virgins with an EZ-Pass lane.
Any more great ideas?
Aren’t clowns supposed to be funny, and not just stupid? Put this one back in the clown car and push it off the nearst cliff. No cliff nearby? Show some moxie: build one for the occasion.

I have little doubt that this has happened in the field. Not because of commanders saying anything, more of a recognition of reality by the guys on the line.
Glad this dumb SOB is retired.

I am not at all interested in political life if you mean elected political life. That is unchanged. But I always keep my eyes open and my ears open to requests for service," he said.
Don't get too comfy. He's looking for an appointed position, where he can really muck it up without answering to us!
In other words, he'll be a political prostitute for the right amount of money.
Not as eloquently as Steyn ; )
Now I am really scared. I could see Colon Blow getting appointed by a liberal President - which could be a dem or a Republican nowadays.

Funny
The RINO shows his true colors.
His wife should tell him to shut up. Again.
“and this clown was Secretary of State???”
“Unfortunately yes.”
Now that Powell is no longer in the Bush Cabinet we should be candid about him. He is a RINO, nothing less. In fact, should the Dem’s win the Presidency, don’t be surprised to see him surface in their administration.
Nothing surprises me any more. This morning I think I heard on Fox News about the possibility of him being on the ticket with Obama. Who knows?
“Nothing surprises me any more.”
Agree Mark.
I would be surprised though if Obama would pick Powell for his VP. The Dem’s already have over 90% of the black vote and I suppose Obama would increase that number to closer to 100%. Perhaps Powell would deliver moderate white votes, couldn’t say. However, I don’t think he would deliver any conservate votes as it appears to me that conservatives have seen him for what he is - a closet liberal and Democrat aka RINO.
