If he did, it would be a terribly tacky thing to do.

I would hope he’d have more class.

Well said...Thompson, ten years ago, would have been dynamite.. Now, he does not look like he has the fire for it.
If he gets the nod, I will vote for him, but he needs to show some fire for the office.

Wheee dawgies!

I don’t know anything about his contract with NBC.
But, if this is what he had to do to cancel it, I’m ALL for it.

Leno does have a good sized audience.
Betcha there will be folks tuned in who never watch Leno...

...like me. ;o)

LOL!

You've been reading the "talking points" too much.

I've never seen someone have so many "hats", and live to tell about it. ;o)

If he does run, he going to have to be clear and explain why he’s running for President, why people should vote for him not against someone else, and what makes his candidacy different from all of the rest.

Unless you're obvious-challenged, the difference between Fred and the other candidates is already vividly apparent. No "explanations" were part of his debut as an instant front-runner, and none will be necessary for him to secure the party's nomination.

Fred doesn't have to 'splain squat.

The Tonight Show is a perfect venue for Fred, whether he “announces” or not.
He’s comfortable with people and vice versa, and speaks very well off the cuff, also charmingly self-effacing.
The other candidates can only WISH for this kind of audience.

" but he needs to show some fire for the office. "
Neither did George Washington have the desire to be President and he turned out fine.
And after his 2 nd term was over, he left the office he never came back to politics.

What a good comparison ~ George Washington.
Talk about unconventional!

I also understand he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

I would like to hear his excuse on this one.

I tried to google the Council on Foreign Relations membership list at:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Council+on+Foreign+Relations+*membership*&btnG=Search

But it doesn’t come up for me.

“I sure hope not. He should announce on July 4th as far away from Hollywood as possible!”

I agree. Enough of this announcing to media personalities and TV comedians.
Others have posted:

“I would like to see Fred announce on payed for airtime speaking directly to the American people. He should give his reasons from his heart (and his script) not in reply to some Hollywood or beltway hack. Put the announcement simultaneously on U-Tube and elsewhere on the net so the spinmeisters cannot edit with impunity. He said he wants to run a different type of campaign, announcing to Letterman is not the way to do it.”

To that I would add an Internet announcement is not the way either. We are going to get only one chance to make the best impression on the American People for Fred. That would be for a stadium-sized announcement event. Preferably on the 4th. We, as Fred’s minions need to show the nation and the world, and FRED, that we are here and we have the POWER!

Yes we need the primetime coverage, and yes we need a net simulcast. If logistically these things are not yet possible, then Fred's announcement should be postphoned until they are. The teaser campaign is still paying benefits. Putting 40,000+ fired up people in the seats will eliminate the opposition. Even the news media will have to stop covering the dwarfs, because they will have lost credibility. Let's quit playing around and deliver a knock out blow from the get-go.

Um, it would be to the AMERICAN PEOPLE ~ a HUGE audience and cross section of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. IOW, VOTERS.

Not that he's going to actually announce on Leno. Perhaps he's still priming the pump.

BS. He can’t develop a reputation for hesistancy or just for being a tease.

I don't get all this negativity about hesitancy or indecisiveness. He first expressed an interest in running in March -- that's only about 11 or 12 weeks ago.

Yet everyone's acting as if he's been dragging this announcement out for a year. True, he decided late but it appears to me that he's been proceeding deliberately and sensibly since then.

A July 4th announcement would be perfectly fine. If he waits much beyond that, then let's talk.

Fair enough. You’ll forgive my zeal. A Fred Thompson candidacy can’t come too soon.
