Will former Senator Fred Thompson pull a "Schwarzenegger" and announce his presidential quest during his upcoming appearance on NBC's "Tonight Show With Jay Leno"?

Hollywood is abuzz with talk that Thompson will do just that when he joins Leno on June 12.

So far, the former Senator from Tennessee and star of TV's "Law & Order" has played hard to get, and won't say if he will throw his hat in the ring for the GOP nomination.

Another source, close to Thompson, explicitly denies the Senator will make any announcement when he appears on Leno's show.

But, if Thompson changes his mind at the last minute and does use the Tonight Show as his political jump pad, it won't be the first time this has happened.

Back in 2003, after heatedly denying he would ever run for governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger did an abrupt about-face and stunned Leno his audience with his gubernatorial announcement. The late night kick-off was great for Schwarzenegger and Leno – who wrangled his best "Tonight" show Wednesday ratings in four years.

Late night shows are becoming the vogue place to make political pitches.

Recently, John McCain officially declared his intent to run for president during a Feb. 28 appearance on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," although his "formal" announcement came a month later.

Thompson "hasn't told us anything, but we hope so," said a "Tonight Show" spokeswoman when asked if he will reveal his presidential aspirations during his appearance.

"It's certainly the place to do it." It sure is. Still, Thompson's camp says he will be mum on his White House bid.

But Thompson does have a cozy relationship with NBC, home of both "Tonight" and "Law & Order..."

If he does run, he going to have to be clear and explain why he’s running for President, why people should vote for him not against someone else, and what makes his candidacy different from all of the rest.

He’s also going to have to reassure people that his health is not an issue. Being in remission due to oral chemo is good now, but can he reasonably reassure the American public that he won’t have to go through full blown chemo or die in office.

I am prepared to support him, but he has to have the perception that he can win in November 2008 against The Dark One AKA Hildebeast.

Then, of course, there's his recurring role as Manhattan District Attorney Arthur Branch on the popular NBC series "Law & Order." Thankfully, that one's in reruns for the summer.

So when does the senator plan -- if ever -- to ditch the glowing lights of Hollywood for the blaze of the campaign trail?

Perhaps Thompson will follow the lead of another successful actor-turned politician (although, technically, Fred Dalton Thompson is a lobbyist-turned-actor-turned-politician-turned actor) in Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

ABC News has confirmed that Thompson will strut his 6-foot-plus frame onto the set of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" for a June 12 appearance.

Although Thompson spokesman Mark Corrallo insists that when and if the senator announces it would be from Tennessee and not on Leno, the scene might prove to be too good to resist...

Schwarzenegger is scheduled to appear Wednesday on "The Tonight Show," by the way. His decision to announce on Leno in 2003 was seen as a nontraditional, populist gimmick calculated to bypass the traditional media. Or it could have been the place where Schwarzenegger felt most comfortable.

I agree. Enough of this announcing to media personalities and TV comedians. I would like to see Fred announce on payed for airtime speaking directly to the American people. He should give his reasons from his heart (and his script) not in reply to some Hollywood or beltway hack. Put the announcement simultaneously on U-Tube and elsewhere on the net so the spinmeisters cannot edit with impunity. He said he wants to run a different type of campaign, announcing to Letterman is not the way to do it.
