The Bush Years In Perspective

In this exclusive, six-part series, we put the Bush presidency in perspective by taking a look at achievements in several key areas, including the economy, homeland security, Iraq, tax cuts and more.

Part Five

A Gentleman In The White House

Leadership: George W. Bush has suffered more barbs than any president since Richard Nixon. His critics could never display the decency he has shown for more than seven years on the national political stage.

Part Four The Singular Vision Of George W. Bush

The Presidency: Burdened by a Democratic Congress that can't see beyond the next election, at least the U.S. is blessed with a president with the ability to see a better future and the courage to take risks to achieve it.

Part Three Bush's Exit Strategy In Iraq Is Victory

The Presidency: George W. Bush, obeying a U.N. mandate, set out to dethrone a mass murderer and an aggressive tyrant, expand democracy and take the war on terror to the enemy. He's done all that and more.

Part Two Homeland Security: So Far, So Good

The Presidency: Addressing Congress just after 9/11, President Bush promised that "as long as the United States of America is determined and strong, this will not be an age of terror." Determination is what explains his perfect record protecting the homeland.

Part One Bush's Real Record On The Economy

The Presidency: Years from now, pundits and academics will surely wonder why President Bush's greatest achievement — his stewardship of the economy — got so little notice during his time in office. Yet that's how it is.

The war... the economy... reduced taxes... homeland security... all that don’t count no more?

Don't forget Pres. Bush's stalwart pro-life stance.

That used to be the #1 issue for conservatives. Now they've switched to immigration with hardly a word of thanks for President Bush delivering on pro-life.

Fickle people.

“Jimmy Carter did zilch good.”

Oh, I don’t know about that — he pardoned all of the Vietnam War draft dodgers to “heal the country”. That thrilled the hell out of those of us that fought the war, there wasn’t a lot of “healing” for any of us in that pardon.

He’s been better than Algore or Kerry would have been and we can and should be thankful for the good things that Bush has done, true. But, those battles are not in front of us right now and there is nothing fickle about fighting the battle you’re in as opposed to reminiscing about the good ol’ days when things went as we wanted them to.

Perspective is to politics as impressionism is to painting.

re: “George Bush = Jimmy Carter”

While I no longer am a staunch supporter of the President, methinks that this stance is a little over the top.

Though he did have his equivalent of the ‘malaise’ speech between calling the Minutemen vigilantes and conservatives ‘not doing what is right for America’.

I’d be surprised if his approval ratings don’t hit the teens shortly.

"Guess you conveniently missed all the positive things Pres. Bush has done."

To quote an old saying: "One aw-shit cancels out all the attaboys". The immigration fiasco is Bush's "aw shit"---just like "no new taxes" was his dad's.

"So you are going to say that George Bush’s presidency is equal to that of Jimmah Carter’s because he is trying to find a solution to the immigration policy?"

"... but Bush as bad as Carter?... really?"

Worse than Carter, actually, because if Bush gets his way with his dumbass approach to "solving the immigration problem", he will have presided over the death of the Republican party, the conservative position, and probably the USA as a functioning Republic by enthroning socialism (aka the Democrats) forever. You don't ACTUALLY believe all those "new citizens" are going to vote Republican, do you.

Just for the fickle who are looking for one mistake to negate many, many positive things.

LOL. Exactly. Because President Bush has gotten rid of them.

He hasn't gotten his due. Just more mud-throwing from the left and, sad to say, the extremely immature and fickle right.

Wow... worse than Carter?

I was in high school during Carter’s term... but I was aware enough to know that I would take George W. Bush over Jimmah all day long.

You seem to feel pretty strongly about it, though... so maybe you shouldn’t vote for him next time and pick someone closer to Jimmah.

By the way... do you think it helps or hurts the conservative movement to say the President is worse than Carter? My guess is that the useful idiots will find someway to use comments like that in their propaganda.

If Bush were a Democrat, conservatives would generally agree he ain't been too bad overall.

But he did NOT run as one, he ran as a CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN.

Conservatives have been lied to, over, and over, and over, ad nauseum.

Bunch of nonsense. President Bush has done pretty much all he promised to do during his campaign. The economy is excellent, he has kept the baby-killers at bay, he has put education standards in place, AND he is an excellent role model as husband, father and son, and christian in our morally decaying society.

AND on top of everything else he is successfully fighting a WOT amidst a steady outpouring of slings and arrows, having gotten rid of two very dangerous regimes.

He is NOT a liar. Far from it. He is quite disciplined in his speech and doesn't shoot off his mouth or lie, unlike the last perjurer-in-chief.

Here's an analogy for you. We are in a 12 round fight. We had some great rounds and some not so great rounds, but now we are in the 10th round and its going badly. Our fighter is not doing well, has taken some major shots and we may not make it to the end of the fight. Not many corners are going to compliment their fighter about how well he did 4 or 5 rounds ago when he's getting the snot kicked out of him and is in danger of getting knocked out.

I will give President Bush credit for things he's done right, but I will not hesitate any longer to point out what I think he's doing wrong and what he needs to do better. Again, there is nothing fickle about fighting the battle you’re in as opposed to reminiscing about the good ol’ days when things went as we wanted them to.

Personally, I'll save the reminiscing for when his presidency is over and we can remember the wonderful things he accomplished. We can toast his greatness and vision and forget the boneheaded things he'd like us to forget. Deal?

But right now, we have other things to do and he's on the wrong side of some major issues. Unless you'd like immigration amnesty and global warming surrender to be on that list of Bush screwups, I'd suggest you stop being so naive, stop whining about fickle conservatives and see that there is a lot more work to be done.

"Bunch of nonsense."

Oh, booshwa!!!

The number of non-conservative bill/positions he has proposed/supported/signed is prodigious.

Conservatives, unlike you, do NOT want the federal government involved in our children's education.

Being an excellent role model is not a requirement for president; in fact, there may be a few Democrats that would qualify, Lieberman, Zell Miller, for instance.

The WOT started well, but his performance since major combat ended has been spotty at best. Oh, and by the way, that Dept of Homeland Security is a rousing success, I've felt SO much safer since he implemented that.

Yup, if he was a Democrat, he'd fit right in.

Well, since he's can't run again, I won't have the opportunity. But you can bet that I won't be voting for anybody else named "Bush". Hopefully, the coming field of Republicans will run someone closer to Reagan. Right now, Fred Thompson's my best choice.
