It depends on whose statistics you accept. But I believe there are move Chinese Muslims in the west of China than all Christians (Catholic and Protestant) in the whole of the country.

I am not sure about the numbers but will check. If I am not wrong, there are more muslims. Geographically and historically, this is understandable. What is north-western China today was formerly the Khwarzamain empire, a huge Turko-muslim caliphate that existed in the 13th century before Genghiz Kagan destroyed it.

Bukhra and Samarkand, considered by some muslims, to be the greatest Islamic cities ever are not too far from China’s western borders.

These areas are seeing significant assertions of muslim identity after the collapse of the Soviet Union (the Soviets used to maintain a tight rein on these elements becasue they were s**t-scared of a grand islamic alliance among these Turko-muslims).

I use the term Turko-muslims because the vast majority of Chinese muslims are not Han Chinese but are ethnic Turks.

I was in China in 1978 and meet an American Catholic priest who stated that there were 10 million Catholics in China. There are many more Protestants so I would believe yes there are more Christians then Muslins in China.
