It is an interesting point you raise, Johnnie. The Taliban had close ties with the Islamic elements in Xinkiang province. These Turkish muslims have been bombing Chinese civilian targets for some time now.

The Sino-Saudi Shanghai Economic Cooperation Council has been established to precisely to defuse this situaiton. The Saudis, as part of China’s long term energy strategy, have agreed to provide Saudi establishment-approved mullahs and build mosques in order to provide a less Wahabbist alternative to Al Quaeda.

I read a fascinating boo on Chinese muslims a few months ago; it was a travelogue and the author wrote that while most Chinese are considerably quiet about their religion and faith and take care not to offend the ChiCom govt., Chinese muslims are as fanatical as their Wahabbi Arab bretheren.
