Talk of Resurrecting Immigration Bill Begins as Autopsy Goes On
WaCompost ^ | Saturday, June 9, 2007 | Shailagh Murray and Jonathan Weisman

Supporters of immigration reform launched new talks to save their tattered bill yesterday, with the chief architects of the bipartisan compromise confident that they could resurrect it -- even as recriminations flew over its stunning collapse.

The rescue mission was dispatched moments after the vote was tallied Thursday night. Sixty votes were needed to end debate and pave the way for final passage, but only 45 senators voted yes. Republican and Democratic negotiators believe they can reach agreement by early next week on the official sticking point: which conservative amendments would be considered before final passage. The list must be short enough for time-conscious Democrats, yet substantive enough for Republicans demanding to be heard.

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

I Like Ike.

The immigration giveaway

Take the Pledge: "I pledge to never, ever vote for anyone, for any office, who votes in favor of the Mexican Invasion Surrender Bill."

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security"

This too is our clarion call to action against elitist, tyrannical government leaders who would foist shAMNSETY on us against our collective will = Despotism (absolute power).

Ready for this? Now they want federal student loans for illegals (never to repay, of course):

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4875270.html

I guess we don’t really need those tax dollars, with our record high national debt (that doesn’t even figure in social security “obligations”)?

Great analysis....you’re right, of course. The unions hated this “Great Compromise” as much as those of us on the Right.
Yet, it was Cornyn (at first), Sessions, and finally, DeMint, who brought up procedural issues that made this amnesty bill collapse (the last time around).

This is not over yet. Bush refuses to give up this easily. It's his stuborn character. He will try to resurect it and call it something else. We have to keep our guard up. We need to keep the pressure up.

STAGE TWO is to go after the people who hire illegals. Start giving them fines and arresting them. Just catch ten or 100 of them on the nightly news. The magnet will dry up and most of the 12 million will go home by themselves.

As an adendum, we should anonymously call the IRS, people working "off the books" means taxes ain't being paid. Make anonymous fliers and hang them around the neighborhood, name names. It's time to embarras these bustards, whether they give to the GOP or Rats, we don't need them.

STOP AMNESTY NOW!! WE CAN DO IT!!

CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!

WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!

Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.

“Building a fence is closing the barn door after the horse has gone.

The money would be better spent on workplace enforcement.”

You need both. Either one by itself is insufficient.
building a fence is cost effective.

“If illegal immigrants can’t earn money, they’ll go home.”
Most illegal aliens are dependents not workers.

One of the major fallacies in this bill and anything else that offers citizenship to illegals is that as long as they’re illegal, they’re cheap labor, which is the root cause of all this stuff to begin with.

But once they’re citizens or even green-card “guest” workers, they’re just as subject to the minimum-wage laws we are. They then become part of the landscape of people who won’t do the grunt labor, and a whole new crop of illegals will be dashing across the border to do the work that the rest of us “won’t do.”
It’s all a bunch of self-perpetuating bovine scatology unless and until the border is secure, which MUST be done, and soon, no matter what else happens. That is the keystone issue.”

__________________________________________________________

I’ve been saying the same thing for 2 years here on FR.

Without securing the borders, millions more will stream in, replacing those newly made “Amnestias” (legal workers)....

Now, anyone care to guess what happens to these 16 million people who are unemployed? The scumbag employers will just continue to hire illegals....leaving the tab for the newly unemployed to us taxpayers

The line for goobermint handouts will be miles long.

And they’re going to sit down and carefully consider the opinions of every interested party......except the American people.

Apparently, the American people and democracy worked in this instance. We have won. Shamnesty is defeated. The rule of law has won. I'm sure it grates at the elitists to no end. People aren't as dumb as they thought.

Jimmy Carter enforced immigration laws. I was living in El Paso at the time, and Nice White Ladies got their cars impounded and sold if they got caught driving their maids to and from the river...

Si, amigo, es verdad.

Nothing personal against the hard working Mexicans here who sweat to do my landscaping. You have to put emotion aside and make decisions logically.

Build the border fence that has already been authorized back in 10/06. Then come back and talk to the American people.

I don't want to hear about "virtual" fencing. That amounts to nothing more than sitting on the front porch asleep during mischief night with a shotgun by your side while kids toilet paper and egg your house.

“Gee Jon, should we screw over the constituency or should we rethink our approach to illegal immigration? “

“Uhhh, I’m not sure Mitch. It’s such a tough decision.”

I say let all the folks that wish to come to America in. That is after they go through a complete security check, learn English, show that they have a sponsor who will provide for their needs, not the taxpayers.
As for the illegals in the nation today, allow them amnesty. A month to leave the country without fear of arrest. If after a month we find undocumented workers, they are deported and banned from the United States forever.

Just a reminder:

"all the GOP lawmakers who spoke with FOX News were upbeat that the legislation could be revived soon — even within a matter of weeks, with one negotiator noting that last year's bill was first pulled from the floor by then-Majority Leader Bill Frist before it was brought back up again and passed."

>>One of the reasons this bill is failing is that many Democrats can not tolerate the idea of AMERICAN union workers getting undercut by cheap immigrant labor.

So the president and his big business buddies who want cheap labor are not going to get it legally, at least.<<

RINOs want illegals to work but not vote.

Dems want illegals to vote but not work.

Yes, sounds like they came close to voting for cloture. After Reid pulled the bill temporarily, Goober Graham insisted that the bill was not dead, they had the votes. Maybe a little ("little" by Washington standards) pork would grease the wheels.

Building a fence is closing the barn door after the horse has gone.

Twenty million horses or so did get out but six billion have not, yet. We need to close the barn door. Build the fence.

We have a law that says build a fence. We have laws that say you can not hire illegals. Enforce the laws and start building the fence and you are right, illegals will go home.
