The Daily FRead
All the Fred news...All in one place

News and discussion about Fred Thompson. Please post any Fred Thompson articles on this thread. Any important breaking news should be posted to it's own thread. Whenever posible I use the print version of the story. Even with DSL some of these pages take forever to load due to the all the junk ads. Also if the the story is on 2 or 3 pages, the print version gives it all on one.

Fred Thompson: Lights, Camera, A$$-Kicking Time

Fred Thomspson has a serious chance to win the hearts of the American people because for more than 30 years, he has lived out his act. He’s actually made a great living playing himself. He’s been a prosecutor in real life and a prosecutor on television’s Law & Order. He’s been a senator on the silver screen -- Born Yesterday – and an actual U.S. Senator from Tennessee. He’s also been a rear admiral, a director of the CIA, a high ranking FBI agent and a White House Chief of Staff but to his credit, anyone can do those jobs.

And to think, he could have just been another cranky attorney telling you to get off his lawn but now he may well be the most complete candidate out there even though he hasn’t “announced” that he’s running. But, really, he left Law & Order on May 30 and has been on the talk show circuit ever since so unless he’s prepping for a roll as a retired actor and senator who almost ran for president, he’s given the public every indication that he’ll hit the campaign trail this summer and autumn.

Worth reading, but hard to follow in spots.

An awkward ad by Fred Thompson

In Thompson's commercials, the deep-voiced actor recounts a tale of military heroism in Iraq, then introduces himself and says LifeLock's service can stop identity theft and is offered free to deployed members of the military.

"While our heroes are protecting us, we have a duty to protect them," Thompson says in his familiar, folksy cadence.

"I urge you to contact LifeLock."

I've heard this comercial -- it's very good. The LA Times seems to be trying the 'guilt by association' gambit.

Defections to Fred Thompson Pose a Major Threat to McCain

John Dowd represented Sen. John McCain in his darkest hour, the "Keating Five" scandal. He supported McCain the first time he ran for president in 2000 and signed up to be a major fundraiser for him in this year's presidential race. But when former senator Fred D. Thompson began thinking about running, the Washington lawyer changed his mind.

--snip--

"I really didn't think Fred was going to do it, but then, little by little, it started to look like he was going to do this," Kiser said. "I thought, 'Uh oh, I better find a way to get out of the Rudy campaign.' "

--snip--

Outreach to key fundraisers in other states has just begun. Thompson has recruited Dorinda Moss, a professional fundraiser. Her résumé includes work as the Midwest regional chairman for the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2004 and, more recently, a term as director of the Republican National Committee's "Regents Program," which courted donors who have contributed at least $25,000 a year.

Poll: Fred Thompson shaking up GOP presidential race...

An Associated Press-Ipsos poll shows former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani leading among the G-O-P contenders with 27 percent. Then comes Senator John McCain at 19 percent and Thompson, an actor and former senator from Tennessee, at 17 percent.

The Zero-to-60 Thompson Run Fred gears up for 2008.

In early March, only a handful of Fred Thompson's good friends knew that he was even thinking about a bid for president. Three months later, according to several polls, Thompson is in second place nationally, trailing frontrunner Rudy Giuliani. He spends his days raising money and assembling an increasingly sophisticated campaign operation. His advisers hold daily conference calls to discuss issues and to craft a schedule that includes visits to states with early caucuses and primaries. Rival campaigns are adjusting their strategies to account for his inevitable entry into the race.

Ask people closest to Thompson how this happened and they often give you the same story: The former senator was simply minding his business when out of nowhere there arose a powerful Draft Fred movement, the likes of which have rarely been seen in American politics. "The groundswell for Fred is the closest thing to a real, genuine draft that I've seen in my 40 years of politics," Senator Lamar Alexander said recently in Chattanooga.

Great article by Stephen Hayes in The Weekly Standard.

Sorry for the broken link to Mason-Dixon. They're here. Once again, results are only available to subscribers, but at least you can see what they've published so you can find it elsewhere.

Oh, YEAH? Well pardon me for exercising some of those free speech rights that were taken away from be by the pro-choice, serial adulterer, child marrying, globalist, open border loving, Fred Thompson!

I’m sorry if I happen to BELIEVE in my free speech unlike you people with the Fred Goggles and Fred Blinders and Fred Masks.

Besides, this whole Fred thing is just a fad. It’s a cult of personality. Fred is far too lazy to ever get out of his chair and bother running for anything. He’ll be the first guy to ever WALK FOR PRESIDENT because he’s too lazy to RUN!!!

/JCEccles impression

Food fight? You wish Fred Thompson could have a food fight. He’s too LAZY to throw any food!! I doubt he could muster up the energy to fling a forkfull of mashed potatoes at anyone, much less RUN FOR PRESIDENT!!!

—I’m JCEccles and I approved this message.

(I hope you know I’m kidding here...)

Great talking point. - America needs a 'lazy' President who confines his activity by directing the executive branch to concentrate on enforcing and defending the Constitution.

A Coolidge on a bully pulpit with a big stick?

Sounds like a plan.
