In a Pentagon news conference today, Gates said he also will recommend Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright for the position of vice chairman.

You know, that was my VERY first thought when Gates said it would get ugly in confirmation hearings...but I thought I must just be too cynical...

Appeasement of liberal Democrats in Congress?

Hitlery Clinton is on the Armed Forces committee.

Wouldn't be surprised if she was gearing up to lead a show trial in order to seem "tough" and get more leftist votes for her campaign.

I believe the Witch has something to do with today's announcement.

A Marine aviator with no ground combat experience. The Army brass are probably not going to like these two appointments. Tonight I will ask my brother, an active serving Colonel, to see what he thinks of this.

We are at a very critical stage between now and Sept. One thing we don’t need is another show trial in July.

Why General Petreaus?
Who are Conway and Mattis?

Conway is the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Mattis is another big cheese. Like Petraeus, they are political hacks who are apparently more concerned with "battlefield ethics", "moral high ground", and "rules of engagement" than they are with the lives of Marines. These guys loudly expressed their disappointment that 40% of Marines polled said that they would NOT rat out their brothers-in-arms in cases where civilians are collaterally killed during a mission or response to attack. So they've ordered additional "sensitivity training" for Marines.

If one Marine gets killed because he hesitated to pull his trigger just long enough to review his "battlefield ethics" and "rules of engagement" (even as he ponders whether he might end up in jail) these officers should be hung.

All these clowns need to GO, but the buck stops with the Commander-in-Chief, and he's the ultimate clown who left the running of the war on terror in the hands of the scumbag ACLU lawyers of JAG. The situation has degenerated into a pathetic disgrace. (See: The Haditha railroad job.) January 2009 can't come fast enough.

Hope that answers your questions.

Regards,
LH

The present Centcom Commander is Navy and now the Joint Chief will also be an Admiral with a surface navy career. Funny how this fits in with three carrier groups being in the general vicinity of Iran.

The former Chiefs should step up and loudly proclaim that the anti-American senators, who wish nothing but US defeat, should be the ones removed from their offices, NOT Pace. This is disgusting, yet the Administration is caving ... I’d like to think that I’d have let them have a show trial similar to the Ollie North or Clarence Thomas publicly shown testimony ... remind the public just how BAD the Dems are!

Odd that Bush fired — and that’s what he’s done, fired them — fired them both (chairman and vice chairman)

Maybe we should call Bush MacArthur instead since the General abandoned the Marines once before.

Jim Mattis is a political hack? You've got the wrong man -- he's the meanest sonofabitch the Corps has seen in a long time! As CG of 1st MarDiv in the OIF attack, Mattis fired the popular CO of the 1st Marine Regiment for not pushing his Marines hard enough. Mattis has commanded at every level, and is the only active Marine who has led a battalion, a brigade and a division in battle. Some describe the ascetic general as a "warrior monk" and a Patton clone, and he speaks his mind no like few in uniform. If we weren't at war, the politicians would be hiding Mattis in a locked closet.

Navy taking over?

4 of 9 Combantant Commanders are Navy, and now CJCS will be, too...

Thanks for the info. Obviously, I misread Mattis.
I stand corrected.

“I’m afraid Shrubby is becoming...”

I’m not sure what this statement means. Let me look into my Bush-Bashing-DU-Psycho-Babble Translation Guide to find the proper translation:

Faux News: The Fox News Channel

AmeriKKKa: The United States Of America

ReThuglicans: Republicans

Shrub: President George W. Bush

Ah, there it is. I usually don’t need this translation guide on this forum, but I use it extensively on the DU so I can interpret their psycho-babble.
