How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico [a proposal for Bush]
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | July 6, 2006 | John Dillin

WASHINGTON – George W. Bush isn't the first Republican president to face a full-blown immigration crisis on the US-Mexican border.

Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America's southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.

President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents - less than one-tenth of today's force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol.

Why hasn't it been made into new small laws and adopted? The answer is political will across the board. We need something that is a sensible reform and bold.

Look, it's not "small laws" or "big laws" or any kind of law that's the problem.

The problem is elites don't want the problem solved. They want illegals here. And because of that, every "solution" they come up with, is twisted, convoluted, and hard to implement. And every elietist "solution" will include ways for the illegals to become legal. And that will be the only part that works - because it's the only part they care about.

If you reread my solution you'll see that it's easy, cheap and effective. It does NOT work to allow illegals to stay here.

If someone broke into your home - say a thief - and you wanted him to leave - you would work on solutions that got him out of the house - not ones that made it easier for him to stay.

You know that, right?

You’ve been a good sounding board over the years...what do you think of my proposal?

Mexico is under no obligation to allow those ships to dock. I can see Vincente simply refusing entry to the vessels carrying his own criminal citizens, effectively dumping the problem on someone else.

It's a nice idea, but -- in an absurdist twist -- the United States would be accused of an act of war if we tried to forcibly return these illegals to their own county.

In another interesting item to consider, a big percentage of the illegals entering from Mexico aren't Mexican. While many other hispanic countries have aliens entering through Mexico, so to do other ethnic groups.

So, much of the deportation won't be people going back to Mexico, but to other countries.

How big is your basement? We can put those that Mexico refuses down there. Perhaps your household stereo would drive them to never re-enter after a month or two.

I've got some Slim Whitman yodeling albums that would drive any sane man screaming into the night. If anyone has a Yoko Ono collection, we could actually wage WAR ...

Fine employers $200 for each illegal hired.
HA! The law already on the books calls for a minimum fine of $250!
§ 1324a. Unlawful employment of aliens
(e) Compliance
(4) Cease and desist order with civil money penalty for hiring, recruiting, and referral violations With respect to a violation of subsection (a)(1)(A) or (a)(2) of this section, the order under this subsection— (A) shall require the person or entity to cease and desist from such violations and to pay a civil penalty in an amount of— (i) not less than $250 and not more than $2,000 for each unauthorized alien with respect to whom a violation of either such subsection occurred,
(ii) not less than $2,000 and not more than $5,000 for each such alien in the case of a person or entity previously subject to one order under this paragraph, or
(iii) not less than $3,000 and not more than $10,000 for each such alien in the case of a person or entity previously subject to more than one order under this paragraph; and

Maybe the fine should be upped to $2,000 per illegal found, with half the money going to the person who "snitched". Snitch on a company with 8 illegals working and the bonus is $$8,000 for the snitcher.

Laid off real estate people will have a new profession.

$200 of the fine can be used to give the illegal a plane ride home. What's left can advertise the program.

Immigration will once again be a legal procrss - and immigrants will be welcomed. A thief who breaks into your home is not an undocumented guest - he's a thief. And a person who breaks into this country isn't an immigrant, they're an illegal.
