Romney bemoans tarnished U.S. image

BEDFORD, N.H. -- Republican Mitt Romney on Wednesday jabbed at President Bush, saying the image of the United States has suffered globally based on the perception that it invaded Iraq unilaterally.

Addressing civic and business leaders, the former Massachusetts governor chided Bush as his fellow Republican traveled overseas for an economic summit and a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been critical of U.S. efforts to install a missile defense shield in Europe.

"I do think that we have suffered over the past several years for a number of reasons, and I think you probably know what they are," Romney said, citing the absence of strong international support in the lead-up to the war.

"There has been the perception that we have not been as open and participative with other nations as is our normal approach," he said.

The anti-Bush comments revived a theme from the debate Tuesday night in which Romney and several of his GOP rivals criticized the president on his management of the war, the immigration bill and diplomacy.

"There are a few countries and a few people who have demonstrated themselves for being so evil that we will cut off our engagement with those countries," Romney said, mentioning Cuba and Iran. "With most of the others, even those that are doing authoritative and outrageous acts like Putin in Russia, I don't want to cut off talking."

He said the next president must not only re-engage Middle East and European leaders -- labeling France's new conservative leader Nicolas Sarkozy as a potential "blood brother" -- but also Latin American nations.

Who the hell cares what the international naysayers think? So they don’t like the United States, eh? Good!! I don’t want to be liked by those people. If they like our foreign policy, then we’re doing something wrong.

"Wouldn’t you think someone in either party should realize that Bush isn’t running again? It seems more and more, both party front runners feel they are campaigning against Bush."

The Republican nominees want to distance themselves from him, for obvious reasons. The Democrat nominees are, well, Democrats. Bashing Bush is their raison d'etre.

Fred Thompson/John Bolton 2008. Can you imagine the reaction in foreign capitols the day that President Thompson and Vice President Bolton are sworn in? Does anyone here think that Vladimir Putin, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kim Jung Il, Hugo Chavez, or anyone else will be spouting threats at those two? Most of us remember just how quickly the mullahs in Iran returned the hostages when Ronald Reagan became president...

How dos any of that refute this Edwardsian nonsense:

“I do think that we have suffered over the past several years for a number of reasons, and I think you probably know what they are,” Romney said, citing the absence of strong international support in the lead-up to the war.

“There has been the perception that we have not been as open and participative with other nations as is our normal approach,” he said.

Except they’d be a helluva lot more scared if it was Hunter sitting in the oval office.

Yes, or Chuck Norris, Ted Nugent or Rambo, but none of those, just like Duncan Hunter, ahs any realistic chance of being the next president...

8 months before the first primary is a little early to be counting fred’s chickens. He could start laying eggs just like the other big three plucked hens.

If Freerepublic and the other conservative sites are any indication, Senator Thompson will beat the defeatocrat nominee in a landslide. I understand you standing up for your man, and I truly respect that, but please take a look at the polls. Fred hasn’t even DECLARED YET and he’s in 2nd or 3rd place in almost all state & national polls!!
When a man is drafted by a national grassroots groundswell of support, something is going on! I’m 47 years old, and I’ve never seen anything like this. I will be working my ass off to bundle at least ONE MILLION dollars together for Fred Thompson, and I daresay I’m not the only one!!

Communicator, Smoonicatror. Bush’s problem from the outset was the ignorance of the forces arrayed against the invasion of Iraq. These included his father and the foreign policy establishment who would go not a step further than the interests of Saudi Arabia allowed. It included the French and the Germans. Through Powell, both managed to pull us into a trap, which was the UN route, whose leaders were in the pocket of Saddam, and who did their level best to prevent his overthrow. Once he was overthrown, they refused to join any effort to establish a new government that included the Shia and the Kurds as significant forces. In other words, Bush rushed into Iraq only to find that the leader of the Free World had almost no support from the older powers, only the support of the British Prime Minister and some of the eastern European states, nor was there any support at home, at least among the elites. How much of this could even the most articulate politican “communicated. Blair tried and you see how far it got him.

There has been the perception that we have not been as open and participative with other nations as is our normal approach," Romney said.

How about some clarification, my Romney bashing friends?

(1) Is this statement inaccurate? How?

(2) If accurate, is it better left unspoken?

(3) Should Romney have denied it, even if it was true?

(4) Should GOP candidates continue to cover for the Bush Administration that despises conservatives?
