A Liberal Mix of Religion and Politics - When Catholic politicians face excommunication.

In a recent issue of the Rhode Island Catholic, a diocesan newspaper, Bishop Thomas Tobin condemned Rudy Giuliani's position on abortion: "As Catholics, we are called, indeed required, to be pro-life, to cherish and protect human life as a precious gift of God from the moment of conception until the time of natural death. As a leader, as a public official, Rudy Giuliani has a special obligation in that regard."

The issue of how the Catholic hierarchy in the U.S. should deal with the problem of pro-choice Catholic politicians came up last during the 2004 presidential election. Some bishops warned Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic nominee, that he should not take Communion in their dioceses because of his support for legalized abortion.
But this problem has been discussed for decades.

They simply aren’t going to do it.

I wish they would excommunicate, but for some sad reason they are all-bluff about it.

But when it comes to providing aid and comfort to illegal aliens the liberals applaud the Church for their efforts, an idea as a Catholic I oppose. No one would be excommunicated for taking a contrary view for a position such as mine on immigration however. In the early sixties many Catholic Churches in the South took a stand on integrating their schools even though many of their parishoners were against it.

So far as that goes, certain churches forget the 8th Commandment: DO NOT STEAL.

Mexicans are stealing the country we built -- and I don't mean the land we stole from the Indians: they are stealing our jobs, schools, prisons, neighborhoods, government services, and sometimes our lives through their basic lawlessness (drunk and reckless driving, gang activity, etc).

I am a Catholic (conservative) and have been very confused about the immigration subject so I asked my friend, a conservative bishop about the situation. Bottom line is, the Vatican even has borders and not everyone gets into heaven. The liberal bishops who came out of seminaries in the 60’s and 70’s are the ones promoting the open borders policy. Made sense to me then. May God bless America.

Abortion is against church doctrine, immigration decisions are not. I am so relieved, I guess that’s what is on my mind. :0)

Excellent article. Thank you. I was reading this on opinionjournal and was about to post it myself. I had no idea that Catholic bishops had used excommunication during the civil rights era, and that liberals had applauded.
