They meant to say “limit the political backlash from the hispanic immigration rights groups and the open-borders business lobby.”

The way those open borders Senators tried to describe those two groups, without using the words you did, would make a poet proud.

“The country would be better off if we didn’t even have a senate these days. No matter what....they just “have” to get a bill passed. It doesn’t matter what it is for or what it does, it just has to get passed.”

Do you think they figure that the economy is due for a slide and when it does there is going to be an outcry from Americans: “GET THE ILLEGALS OUT OF HERE NOW!!!”

I had no idea Mr. Lott had lost his mind.

One has to wonder whether Senator Lott's support for giving amnesty & citizenship rights to 20 million Mexican & Central Americans who illegally jumped our border derives from some sort of psychological urge to prove he is not a "racist," after the debacle in which he lost his leadership position over the Senator Thurmond birthday party kerfluffle.

IIRC, that was followed by a fair bit of apologizing, groveling and self-abasement by Senator Lott to prove to all the usual suspects that he was really not a racist.

It may be the case that he is not fit any longer to represent his consituents because of his own personal psychological reasons.

It wasn’t just a bad bill, it was incompetent politics.

Which will serve as jorg's legacy.

“The headline is going to be: ‘The president fails again,’” Reid said.

Wrong, you fool majority leader. The headline will be: Incompetent Democrat Senate Majority Leader Screws up a Bill That was Supposed to Have 70 votes. It's a good thing the Democrat Congress is so incompetent. They could be pretty dangerous if they actually got their act together.

Tell that to the Republicans in Maryland, who lost the election last year to illegal voters.

We just witnessed The End of the Bush Presidency

There's nothing left. Nobody in either party will support him on anything. He's done.

Just so much joy in one day!

Jon Kyl of Arizona, said the bill was “off track” and the language needed to be stripped before final passage.

I'd say the bill was a train wreck.

(Failure to work through Republican concerns in a narrowly divided Senate “is the reason why this Congress to this point has a paltry list of accomplishments,” McConnell said, calling Reid’s move a “power grab.” )

Finally a Republican leader fighting fire with fire. A breath of fresh air...

Oh? And from whence is this "backlash" to come? Ohhhhhhhhh, yes. George Soros and his scum-under-the-sludge-at-the-bottom-of-the-barrel ilk.

Yep, dems threw blacks, union members and unskilled workers away for this bill. No backlash there.

What's left is old moneybags like Soros and Hollyweird's puffed up drama queens who luv, just luuuuvvv dependent grateful submissive (and cheap) illegals. Dems have no clue.

Backlash! If the Senate had voted to stop debate you would’ve see backlash.
I mean if you’re a Senator and you’ve got Michael Savage and Hugh Hewitt saying this is a bad bill, you might want to rethink it.

Very true. I think you need to add the internet (especially email) and talk radio, too. Watch for the Democrats to come after both of those vehicles. They just got run over by them.

The Majority Leader just said so, which tells me that we dodged a huge bullet today. The bill is off the floor and back to the drawing board. Good. It could not be salvaged with the process that was built on the premise of a jam down, but perhaps it can be made to work if the working group reconvenes and addresses the serious objections made by people willing to see a reform bill, but only one that puts security first.
