Supporters said it had much of what I wanted -- strong enforcement, a border fence, only non-criminals allowed, fines, back taxes, a separate temporary guest worker program without permanent resident status.
But it turns out that is not true. The bill has almost none of those things, and is an insult to those who support the sane middle ground on this issue.
...
Let's start with the basic premise -- we want to stop new illegal immigration. But according to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill will at best only stop 25 percent. Some people would give amnesty in exchange for closing our borders -- but this bill doesn't come close.
...
And none of the "triggers" requires actual enforcement. The DHS Secretary must certify the triggers are "established, funded, and operational," but as Rep. Lamar Smith notes, "not that they are effective in controlling the border and preventing further illegal immigration."
...
Worse, the illegal immigrants get amnesty (the new probationary "z-visa") the day the bill is signed, before any "triggers" are met.
...
We want immigrants to speak English. But Sen. Jeff Sessions says "Illegal aliens are not required to demonstrate any proficiency in English for more than a decade after they are granted amnesty."
...
Illegal immigrants don't even go to the back of the line! Once people who legally applied before 2005 are processed, those here illegally get to cut in front of those legally waiting ...
There's no reason to rush an immigration bill. The main enforcement provisions (fence, more agents, and more detention facilities) are already law, and just need to be enforced. The illegal immigrants have survived 20 years "in the shadows"; they'll last a while longer. This bill is a failure -- we need to kill it and start over.

Those who have read my comments here know that I am "somewhat pro-amnesty", at least for illegals that have lived and worked here so long you can reasonably say we encouraged them to think of our country as their home (kind of like "squatters rights" you can get by open and notorious use of someone else's property).
But this bill sucks, and I say so. My readers ALSO know my pro-amnesty position, so hopefully they'll be open to me telling them to oppose this bill.
Or kill the careers of those who vote for it.
Just say NO to Amnesty!! Before its too late!!

My vote is for both.
President Bush did himself no favors last week by denouncing those opposed to the immigration bill as uninterested in the nation's well-being. On its own, the decision to combine border security with naturalization of illegal immigrants has always been the President's way of holding a national priority (security) hostage to a policy (legalization) that he views as desirable.by Robert Novak
Describes Bush's tactics perfectly IMO.
Bush, the "security president", has ignored his duty to protect the country and enforce its laws, even defunding earlier border bills, as collateral for "compromising" on his legalization.
A shameful man. If the Democrats weren't so neck deep on this, and obsessed with proving him a liar on WMDs, they would point out his lies on this.
A few did last year, but backed down...always wondered about that, it was a "winner" of an argument. Now I understand that they are a puppet of the wage depression lobbies as much as the Repubs...they have to dance carefully too.
But this bill sucks, and I say so.

Under statement of the century. It is a pending DISASTER for the REAL CITIZENS of America. This issue should be put off for debate in the Presidential election. It is far too important to be ramrodded by a bunch of malfeasant, vote and money grubbing pols in Washington, at a disasterous cost to America — in some hurried fashion to put one over on America’s voters. Bush, Kennedy, McCain and Kyl are marked as the arrogant, foolish elitists they are, with the reprehensible way they are trying to re-engineer America’s soverignty, demographics and voting public.
Shame be upon them and all that support this horrible, monstrous bill.
Has the second cloture vote started yet? It was supposed to be at 5:00 or 5:30 PM, eastern time.
Kill it before it grows.....
CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!
WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!
Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.
And they all wonder why we don't trust our government?!
LOL!!
Exactly. He's had six years to improve our border security, and he hasn't done jack.
[Supporters said it had much of what I wanted — strong enforcement, a border fence, only non-criminals allowed, fines, back taxes, a separate temporary guest worker program without permanent resident status.

Yup, and our elitist President and the other rinos think conservative Christians and conservatives are dumb enough to believe the above lies. We are not the democrat base and the rino who want to run Giulliani better get that straight if they want to win the Presidential election in 2008.
