Supporters of Fred Thompson are seeking to raise $4.6 million to help launch the former senator and "Law & Order stars expected run for president in 2008.
A group called the First-Day Founders got the ball rolling when all 100 members each donated the primary maximum of $2,300 on June 1, the day Thompsons exploratory committee filed with the Tennessee secretary of state, allowing the committee to begin fundraising.
If the First-Day Founders come through with their fundraising efforts, "Thompson presumably would start off with $4.6 million in seed money, The Hill newspaper reported.
"Speculation has been rampant as of late that the former senator is all but in the race
and such aggressive fundraising efforts seem to support that notion.
Some analysts believe that Thompson will not announce his candidacy before the end of the second filing period because he might appear financially weak compared to candidates who have had more time to raise money, according to The Hill.
In addition to the First-Day Founders, several Web sites that were formed to urge a Thompson run have been raising money as well. GrassrootsVoter.com claims it has signed 17,000 volunteers from all 50 states, and www.Fred08.com is also asking for donations.

It’s ridiculous to keep promoting the idea that Fred Thompson is Ronald Reagan, or some political reincarnation of him.

Someone will need to explain why a term and a half senator with a mediocre (at best) record deserves to be seen as the great conservative hope.

True, and it’s unfair to either. Even Ronald Reagan isn’t Ronald Reagan. Thompson needs to create his own identity (which he is doing..) He is strong enough to stand on his own.

“Fred Thompson is not Ronald Reagan.”
Thank goodness as Ronald Regan has passed on.

I will do my best to raise at least 1 million dollars for Senator Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign. I suggest everyone here that believes in Fred contact like-minded friends, neighbors, relatives, church/synagogue members & anyone they can think of. In the 1980’s I was very successful in fund raising for my local GOP committee by simply calling people registered R or I in Who’s Who.

I haven’t been.
I HAVE, correctly, compared the two men where they are similar. Never once said he was a reincarnation of RWR.

VERY few freepers have made that comparison. That’s something being promoted by...a few pundits here and there- but noticably NOT by Fred.
It does both men a dis-service.

His record is fine. What makes him appealing are a few things:
-by far the most conservative candidate with a snowball’s chance in hell of winning the general or the nomination even
-likeable and straight-talking
-against the amnesty bill without being a one-trick pony like HunterTancredo
-Best fiscal record of anyone running
-anti-corruption
-non-traditional
-been outside DC long enough to be trustworthy, but spent enough time there to know how things work and be experienced in such matters

Exactly, and that's my only point. But the people who believe and promote Thompson as the next Reagan are going to end up being disappointed.
Reagan is a legend, and no one, even the man himself, can live up to a legend.

Unfortunately there are way too many Giuliani and Romney supporters on here. We won’t stay a FReeRepublic if either of those gun grabbers gets elected. And then there are the multitudes who support those who will never poll more than one or two percent. I’m a pragmatist. I know Duncan Hunter, however conservative he is, will never break into the top tier. The only acceptable candidate that can do that and stand a chance in November 2008 is Fred Thompson. And that’s who I’m supporting. 2008 is too important to lose. With the Rats in control of Congress, there needs to be a counterbalance in the White House. And the next president will also be nominating at least one or two Supreme Court justices. If Hillary or Hussein wins, we all know which way the court will tilt. The Republican nominee is going to be either Fred Thompson, Giuliani, Romney or McCain. Now is the time for all good FReepers to decide which of the four they support. Choose wisely...as if the fate of our great nation depends on it, because it does.
