We are exactly one month away from the second annual Texas Transportation Forum to be held July 18–20 in Austin at the Hilton Austin located at 500 East 4th Street, one block north of the Austin Convention Center. Local, regional and state leaders will join national experts in exploring the solutions to "Keep Texas Moving."

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the Associated General Contractors of Texas, the Texas Good Roads Transportation Association, and the Texas Transportation Institute are co-hosts for the event.

The keynote speaker for the opening session on July 19 will be Alan E. Pisarski, author of Commuting in America III.

The general session will follow with reports from different regions in Texas, moderated by Hope Andrade, commissioner on the Texas Transportation Commission. Presenting reports will be Mike Heiligenstein, executive director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority; William E. Thornton, chair of the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority; David Allex, chair of the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority; and Michael Reeves, president of the Ports-to-Plains Corridor Coalition.

Breakout session topics on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning will include state and national legislative updates; the cost of congestion; transportation financing; available financial programs; freight and commuter rail issues, and the Trans-Texas Corridor.

Visit the forum website at www.dot.state.tx.us/ttf for the complete agenda, speaker information and event registration.

Because it is now past the early registration deadline, the registration cost is $375 for non-government attendees and $225 for government employees. The government rate includes city, county, state, and national officials, Regional Mobility Authorities, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) employees, Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) employees, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) employees, and retirees of the last three organizations (TxDOT, TTI, FHWA) who are not employed elsewhere.

Three weeks later, August 7–10, the 10th annual Texas Transportation Summit will bring together another impressive assemblage at Westin Dallas Fort Worth Airport. The theme for this year's summit will be "The Future Starts Today."

Formerly held at the Omni Mandalay in Las Colinas, the city of Irving continues to host this event along with a multitude of organizations including the American Concrete Institute; the International Bridge, Tunnel & Turnpike Association; the National Society of Professional Engineers; and the Transportation & Development Institute of ASCE to name just a few. Quite a number of well-known names in the construction industry also contribute sponsorships: Birkhoff, Hendricks & Conway; Carter & Burgess; Chiang, Patel, & Yerby; Civil Associates Inc.; Craig Olden Inc.; Durable Specialties; Freese & Nichols; Garver Engineers; Halff Associates; Holt Cat; Huitt-Zollars; and Kellog, Brown & Root.

Confirmed speakers include U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions; Texas Senator John Carona; Texas Senator Florence Shapiro; Texas Senator Royce West; Texas Senator Rodney Ellis; Texas Representative Dan Flynn; Tom Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Cliff Eby, deputy administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration; Ahmed El-Manakhly, deputy director of Planning & Research for the Suez Canal; Alberto Aleman Zubieta, president of the Panama Canal; Neil Schuster, president of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America; and John Horsley, executive director of AASHTO.

In its 10 years, the Transportation Summit has developed a more national participation and direction, promoting the development of a National Multimodal Transportation Policy to guide the future of transportation in the nation. More government leaders and planners seem to attend this event. Experts will discuss highways, transit, freight and high-speed rail, seaports, aviation, security, safety, financing and intelligent transportation issues, and the factors that will be driving growth and change in transportation over the next 50 years.

The website for the Transportation Summit is www.2007transportationsummit.com.

It appears that our song has been reversed — the eyes of the nation are now upon Texas.

If’n they’d just get to building and quit all this talking maybe we’d have some uncongested roadways to travel here in Texas....

The main contact is my best friend’s husband. My best friend is also a civil engineer and very involved in transportation. I’m sure she’ll be at this.

I wonder if they’ll jibber-jabber about PPPs a lot?
