Lynne Cheney, Susan Thomas floated as possible replacements for late Sen. Craig Thomas

Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, is being floated in Senate GOP leadership circles as a possible replacement for the last Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.), who died Monday night. Susan Thomas, the late senator's wife, has also been mentioned by Senate Republicans as a potential choice to take over for her husband, as well as former Justice Department official Tom Sansonetti.

One GOP insider said Lynne Cheney had been in Washington "too long" to be acceptable to the Wyoming GOP, despite her long resume, and Susan Thomas would not be interested in serving out her husband's term.

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Dick Cheney, who attends the regular Tuesday policy luncheon by Senate Republicans, were spotted talking yesterday afternoon, but Enzi said Lynne Cheney was not discussed. In fact, Enzi said, he is not involved in any discussions related to Thomas' replacement..

"I talk to Dick Cheney any chance I can get," Enzi said on Wednesday. "But not about that."

The Wyoming GOP has 15 days from Tuesday to recommend three replacements to Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal (D). Freudenthal will then name Thomas' successor from that list. That person will face re-election next year, as will Enzi.

Other candidates mentioned in media reports include: state Sen. John Barrasso; state Sen. Colin Simpson, son of former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.); and U.S. Attorney Matt Mead.

Susan Thomas, the late senator's wife, has also been mentioned by Senate Republicans

More more widows. That is an awful practice and tradition.

I don’t think it’s good, either. But I’d be really happy to see Lynne Cheney get it. She has always struck me as being really smart and on-board with her husband’s policies.

Under normal circumstances, I'd be all for Lynne getting in there.

But since Lynne is married to Dick, and Dick is "married" to W, then I have to voice my opinion that this should NOT happen!

We need all the votes we can muster against this rotten amnesty bill. Lynne, by virtue of her ties, would never vote against it, nor voice opinion against it during any pre-selection hearings.

NO AMNESTY! NUKE THIS BILL! THIS IS PRIORITY #1!

Lynn, has been around Washington too long, come on let’s spread the gravy around, and no widows. Just because you were married to a Senator does not give you a pass go card. Let us get someone that would look out for Wyoming interests.

We should be discussing this it terms of a) what are the issues in front of the Senate for the next 18 months, and then b) how would the fill-in both advocate and then vote on such issues.

Given the direction the Bush Whitehouse is turning, do you really trust someone with such close ties to it? Unless Lynne comes out and burns her bridges in public - in a very real way - with the current Whitehouse policy, it would be giving Karl Rove & Jorge W. a door directly into the Senate.

The Dem. Gov. is going to choose the weakest of the candidates the State GOP puts forwards.

The rule is that the Republicans nominate three, and the Democrat governor appoints one of them.

So it’s important that all three should be solid.
