Live Thread: Senate Amnesty/Immigration Debate, 6/06/07 (Cloture Filed By Reid)
The United States Senate (with FR input) via C-Span 2 | truthkeeper

The debate continues. Reid took the floor to say that he has filed for cloture. Deeply sorry...he'd like to hear more debate...but they have to get back to the other work of the American people, dontcha know.

If I understood correctly, whatever amendments get heard, get heard. If not, tough luck. I thought I heard they wanted a final vote on this mess by tomorrow afternoon.

The 2-hour debate on the Cornyn Amendment (no legalization for criminals, gang-bangers, absconders, etc.) is just starting now. Cornyn is speaking.

I also heard yesterday that Kyl would pull his support from this bill if it remains in its un-amended form. If anyone knows more please fill us in.

I read something on this morning’s Politco.com that Reid wants to limit amendments to save the dem senators from difficult votes.

These guys are fools. It’s been 40 years since the last ammnesty and they want to close debate in 30 hours. They better start listening to the American people and not the illegals if they want to retain their seats in Congress at the next election. I still believe though, it’s a matter of Congress wanting open borders between the U.S. and Mexico. They are pushing for the NAU.

Thanks for that. This may be a dumb question, but what happens to THIS bill if it's pulled? I thought last year's was dead and instead it was pulled out of a black hole a couple of weeks ago.

Anyone know?

TURN THE ENEMIES WEAPON AGAINST HIM

Call the “Senate Immigration Reform Hotline” at 1 800 417 7666
Press 1 for your senior senator, 2 for your junior senator.

This will connect you DIRECTLY to your senator without going through the congressional switchboard.

JAM THE LINES. LET THEM HEAR OUR ANGER AND FURY.

My representation is all Democrat:
House - Betty Sutton
Senate - Sharrod Brown, George Voinovich

No corrections please, Voinovich is more Democrat than Republican.

Anyway, I sent this to all 3, for what it’s worth:

Rep. or Sen. XXXX,
I am writing you to express my concern over the immigration reform bill. There are so many things wrong with this it’s hard to know where to begin. I believe most Americans, and by implication, most of your constituents, are against this immigration reform.
Immigration reform has been done twice before, and it amounted to amnesty with no meaningful changes in the mechanism. Now, we are on the verge of doing it again.
I’m telling you to use common sense and stop this bill. I’m also telling you to be part of the process to fix this problem. I’ll list what I know to be wrong with illegal immigration:

- It’s illegal! How can we be a nation of laws, and admit huge numbers of new citizens who are here by virtue of breaking our laws? That’s just wrong, no matter how you look at it.

- It’s insulting to those who’ve gone through the process, and have legally immigrated.

- Illegals tax our social infrastructure. They have not paid taxes, they have not built our systems, and they come here in need of using our medical facilities, our schools, our welfare systems.

- They are not medically screened. They bring diseases that we thought we had controlled, or eliminated.

- Many illegals work below minimum wage. It artifically drives down the wages of hardworking Americans.

- It’s a national security issue. Anyone can come over that border, not just Mexicans. Very Hispanic looking Arabs have made their way over the border into America. Control border access, build the fence.

This is such a common sense thing, that everyone I know is highly frustrated by Washington’s refusal to listen to the people. I am strongly invested in this issue and I will pay attention to who votes for what, and will not forget said votes.
I’m asking you to do what’s right for America, and what’s right for your constituents. Reject the immigration reform. Enforce our laws, control our border.

Thank you,
brownsfan

It’s dead unless the Rat leadership chooses to bring it back later in the session.

This isn’t the same bill as last years. This is a “special”
treat negotiated behind closed doors which they tried to ram through without any debate or changes.

The swimmer speaking now and saying he voted AGAINST the 1986 bill; says “That WAS an amnesty.”

Oh...I thought when they took that vote a couple of weeks ago it was actually on that old bill from last year, and they are trying to ram this one through as a “substitute” and avoid committee scrutiny. We talked about that over here at the time...did I misunderstand?

Mr. Reid said that if he could not muster the votes needed for cloture, he would move on to other matters — a vote of no confidence in the attorney general, Alberto R. Gonzales, and then energy legislation.

Mr. Reid said he saw only a tiny possibility that the Senate might return to immigration at a later date, but he added, “I never say never.”

Kennedy says the last amnesty passed during a Republican adminstration and no enforcement was done during that time period, 1986-1992.

Kennedy now trouncing Cornyn Amendment. Says the bill classifies “garden variety offenses” as felonies. Who would know better, huh!

Unbelievable irony:

Kennedy is on the floor, crying, claiming that the 1986 bill was amnesty. He asserts that Republican administrations (Reagan 80’s, Bush, 00’s) are the ones irresponsible for not enforcing the existing border laws.

Kennedy is skewering ‘Republican administrations’, stabbing the Bush Adm in the back, even though the Bush Adm is the one pushing this bill.

[Is the White House that out of touch? Kennedy is stabbing them in the back and attacking them while pushing their bill through. Bush needs to find some new friends. His new tone hasn’t worked and still isn’t working.]

Kennedy is offering a counter amendment to Cornyn’s and discussing it now. If he’s offering it, it must be lousier.

Reid’s action is good news, in a perverse way. Pro-illegal Republican senators were hoping that these cosmetic amendments would give them cover and allow them to claim that this bill is “not amnesty.”

As a result of this heavy-handed action by Reid, Republican senators might be forced to unite against this bill in its current form.

The CIR bill is a disaster and it shouldn’t pass the Senate. Failure here will prevent the House and Nutsy Pelosi from getting any ideas.

Does that include breaking an entering into our country? Oh, wait, they've already decided that that's OK...
