Catholic Bishop compares Giuliani to Pontius Pilate
Evangelicals for Mitt ^ | June 05, 2007 | Nancy French

Posted on 06/05/2007 2:50:36 PM PDT by TexanSniper

It all started when Rev. Thomas Tobin was invited to attend a "Rudy for President" fundraiser for $1500.

In response the Catholic Bishop of Providence, R.I. (who's not even a Republican) wrote "My RSVP to Rudy Giuliani," which indicates a certain level of dissatifaction with the former Mayor's stance on abortion:

Rudy’s explanation is a classic expression of the position on abortion we’ve heard from weak-kneed politicians so frequently in recent years:

“I’m personally opposed to but don’t want to impose my views on other people.” The incongruity of that position has been exposed many times now. As I’ve asked previously, would we let any politician get away with the same pathetic cop-out on other issues: “I’m personally opposed to . . . racial discrimination, sexual abuse, prostitution, drug abuse, polygamy, incest . . . but don’t want to impose my beliefs on others?”

Why is it that when I hear someone explaining this position, I think of the sad figure of Pontius Pilate in the Gospels, who personally found no guilt in Jesus, but for fear of the crowd, washed his hands of the whole affair and handed Jesus over to be crucified. I can just hear Pilate saying, “You know, I’m personally opposed to crucifixion but I don’t want to impose my belief on others.”

Interestingly, he asks the question I think all of us want answered: Why does Rudy "hate abortion" and believe it's morally wrong?

I'll bet this is the last "Rudy for President" function Bishop Tobin receives. Read the whole thing.

Pilate was just doing his job and left the decision up to the people. They liked Barabbas. That’s not Pilate’s fault.

Why doesn’t His Eminence also condemn the many Irish Catholic politicians who are also pro-abortion?

There are times when we do what the majority wants, and times when we don’t.

He seems to have done that:

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has a message for Catholic politicians - such as U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty -- who see their public duties as clashing with the tenets of their faith.

Ditch the job.

The bishop is stung by the attitude of pols, like these two Democrats, who personally think abortion is wrong but who, in their government roles, support abortion rights. He told me, "We need some moral courage among our politicians. Where are the people who stand up and say, 'This is what I believe and I will live this and I will proclaim it regardless of where it leads in the electoral process'?" He'd say the same kind of thing about you and your employment. source

I am personally opposed to wife-beating, but it’s not my place to intrude on other people’s families.

He does if you read the whole thing...

Catholic politicians of both parties, nationwide, have followed a similar path in abandoning the Faith for the sake of political expediency: Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Pat Leahy, Nancy Pelosi, and Joe Biden come quickly to mind. And on a local level, of course, Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Senator Jack Reed. How these intelligent men and women will someday stand before the judgment seat of God and explain why they legitimized the death of countless innocent children in the sin of abortion is beyond me"

I am personally opposed to ritual human sacrifice, but I realize it is a tradition of many native peoples, so I’m not going to...

You mean like Ted Kennedy and John Kerry? I’ve wondered the same thing. Seems hypocritical to me....but that’s just me.

Where is the good Bishop’s criticism of Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, both good Catholic boys who have done more to aid abortion in the US than Gulianni ever has?

Read the article. He singles out Giuliani for criticism because the Giuliani campaign decided to invite him to a fund-raiser.

Well, I personally oppose murder, but many people are inconvenienced by other people who decrease their quality of life, and since their life is being affected I won’t judge or impose my beliefs on anyone else.

Oh, and just because a Roman Catholic bishop critises Rudy, doesn’t mean he would endorse Romney. I think most conservative RCs would consider mormonism to be a cult.

I call BS on the whole thing......Catholic Bishops have for the most part given a pass to every single abortion loving RAt politician in the nation....not only a pass, but they routinely back everything Demoratic and they merely touch on that silly abortion deal....

the Bishop had better be condemning Romeny and Kennedy as well....and Pelosi and the rest.....all abortion "haters" but supporters and proponents of it ...
