You really need to reread the Federalist papers. There were some very good reasons why Senators weren't popularly elected.

Those reasons are just as valid today as they were in 1780.

On the other hand, there were good reasons why it was considered a good idea at the time, above and beyond the inability of some states to decide who to send. By the time the 17th passed, most states had already passed laws that had the same effect, and the senators so elected swayed the amendment vote.
