An 8-year-old boy was fatally wounded in eastern Indonesia when a Komodo dragon grabbed him by the waist and shook him violently before fleeing.
The rare attack by one of the giant lizards occurred during the weekend in a national park on Komodo Island, Sky News reported Monday. The boy had gone behind a bush to relief himself when he was grabbed by the animal. The boy's uncle threw rocks at the lizard until it released him but the child bled to death within half an hour.
A search was under way for the Komodo dragon.
National park spokesman Heru Rudiharto said attacks on humans are rare and it was the first fatal incident in 33 years. There are fewer than 4,000 of the animals, which can grow up to nine feet long and weigh up to 365 pounds.
"Perhaps the lizards' natural prey has decreased because we are entering the dry season and there has been too much deer hunting," he said.

Indonesia is certainly beautiful, but it does have a large collection of killers.

Even if the kid hadn't bled out he most likely would have died anyway.
The bites from these creatures are notoriously infective. They feed on carrion and they're mouths are full of lots of bacterial nasties.

As I understand it...most of their prey die from the infection as a result of the bite. Either way, a nasty ending.

I’ve seen Malaysian Water Monitors in the wild and they were over 2m long. I would hate to run into a Komodo who are massive.

Yep, I remember the Crocodile Hunter out in the bush messing with these lizards. No thanks!!

Komodo Dragons are like Polar Bears in that they are fearless of just about anything, especially humans.
You can walk right up to them, although it is beyond me why anyone would want to.

They are like sharks with their keen sense of smell. When they goet a whiff of it they come running.

Actually, they aren’t so bad.
One of them bit the foot of some leftist Hollywood Star’s husband - I think it was Sharon Stone’s old man. So they have their uses and practical sides.
