Brutal attack on jake
Boston Herald ^ | June 5, 2007 | Michele McPhee

Police are hunting for four thugs wearing Yankees baseball caps who attacked a veteran Boston Fire Department commander outside a Charlestown firehouse, leaving him with a broken eye socket and 14 stitches across his forehead.

But the deepest wound Lt. Christopher Corwin suffered in the assault was that his injuries forced him to miss a fellow firefighter’s funeral yesterday.

Corwin, 42, was helping a tractor-trailer driver turn around, using the apron of Ladder 9/Engine 32’s lot in Sullivan Square around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, when a dark-colored sedan allegedly tried to race around the truck, almost hitting another firefighter.

Why are articles of clothing solely being given as a description? I was in south Florida last month and a criminal was described in the same way (hooded sweatshirt, or whatever). Someone can discard an article of clothing is mere seconds.

The correct resolution to this event should have sounded like this:

BANG - BANG - BANG - BANG

"Hey guys...cleanup on aisle three. And can somebody call a wrecker?"

Probably because the articles of clothing in question were Yankee hats. :)

It’s an attempt to avoid racial characterizations. 4 youths wearing Yankees baseball caps translates to “4 brothers from the hood.”

Which would have been swiftly followed by CLINK-CLINK here in the Commonwealth.

If they have little to go on except something superficial like articles of clothing, they will still put out the info they have.

Here’s the deal: people can discard clothing, but they can’t go back and undo the fact that they were wearing it the day of the crime. Some member of the public might have seen something or known some piece of information that might line up with that clothing description of the perp. They call in a tip, such as, I saw a guy who’s known around da hood wearing something like that on that day.

Anything, any little thing might give them a starting point.

Well, you can't have ideal outcomes without ideal circumstances, I guess.

Why are articles of clothing solely being given as a description?

.....because the articles of clothing are Yankee baseball caps.

Remember this one? .....

Two boys are playing hockey on a pond in Boston Common when one is attacked by a rabid Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy takes his stick, wedges it down the dog's collar and twists, breaking the dog's neck.

A reporter who was strolling by sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy. "Young Bruins Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal," he starts writing in his notebook.

"But I'm not a Bruins fan," the little hero replied.

"Sorry, since we are in Boston, I just assumed you were." Said the reporter and starts again. "Red Sox Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack," he continued writing in his notebook.

"I'm not a Red Sox fan either," the boy said.

"I assumed everyone in Boston was either for the Bruins or Red Sox. What team do you root for?" the reporter asked. "I'm a Yankees fan." The child said. The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes, "Little Bastard from New York Kills Beloved Family Pet."

The Ch. 5 6 O’Clock news just described them as wearing hats. I guess they wanted to give Skankees fans a chance to get out of town.

Also, maybe they can get some kind of ID from the caps. It’s good to remember everything one can from something like this. Where is the harm?

Someone can discard an article of clothing

But someone of the perp's acquaintances may identify him as the person in question. A waitress in a diner may call in, reporting that she served the perps earlier in the day. A former girlfriend may remember washing that article of clothing and call the police (especially if disgruntled).
