Violence: Chavez's Last Resort?

Freedom: As protests in Venezuela carry into a second week, it's clear Hugo Chavez crossed a line by shutting down a big TV station. With his legitimacy ebbing fast, he'll repress more.

A kind of Rubicon was crossed when the communist dictator, ignoring the pleadings of even loyal supporters, including his poverty-stricken political base and much of the international left, bulled forward to shut down the popular RCTV television station May 27. He lost political capital in a way he never had before.

His absurd justifications were a sign of a dictator on the defensive. The move against RCTV, he insisted, was no shutdown but merely a regulatory decision — and his minions said they'd sue anyone who said otherwise. But no one was fooled.

Gee, the article pretty much reads the same if you substitute “Linda” for “Hugo”.

It also reads pretty much the same if you plug in Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, Howard Dean, John Kerry, John Edwards, Bill Clinton, Michael Moore, Al Franken, Barbra Streisand, or MIchaelTArchangel for “Hugo Chavez.”

In the words of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, all that's left for him are the two pillars of totalitarianism: lies and violence.

This is exactly where the DemocRATs are heading.

Need to start a dead pool on Hugito.

Yeah, but I worry that Marcel Granier might go first.

No, next he will ask Carter to come down and mediate an end to the crisis.

I heard on Fox that they say RCTV will come back if prisoners are released from Guantanamo.

Who is Chavez trying to please here, the left in general by talking about Guantanamo or the terrorists in particular like the ones held there?

All the Democrat Socialists and Communists here in the US are probably still applauding Chubby’s seizure of the TV station.

I’ll bet they’ve never watched communist TV.

Don’t worry Hugo, I’m sure your pal Cindy Sheehag will be flying right down there to buck you up - that is, as soon as she finds someone on the left willing to write her a check to finance the visit.

(picturing Cindy waiting by the phone for Soros to give her the confirmation number for her BrazilAir flight.....and waiting....)

Need to start a dead pool...

SAJ, I suspect that your thoughts are not lost on "Hugito" himself.

As Sir Winston said...Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry.

An interesting article on Chavez in National Geographic a while back had 'chivistas' claiming that he was giving power to the poor people, at last.

Their disdain for the moneyed class was well documented. Well-meaning liberals all (the chavistas), they fail to recognize the un-natural state people must live in, in order to achieve social equality [while trying to get the trains to run on time].

Liberals, socialists, and communists fail to recognize that their highest calling is that of envious men, rather than the most generous offerings made to man by an entity he must forever envy; and to whose generosity he'll neither conquer, supress, or deny, in his lifetime.
