The kid should get a bunch of his friends to start coming to the store and hanging out, talking to the clerks to inquire where he went, etc. This would frighten the crap out of the manager, who would probably call the cops and get the store in the newspaper in a negative way. There would be no charges that would stick, though, and the manager would probably get fired. That’s life on Main Street. The fired kid probably would remain fired, but he’ll go off to college or join the service and grow up to be a libertarian.

Only someone steeped in PCism could leap from a whistle to rape (not rap)

Only someone steeped in Spellchism could make the mistake of using rapped instead of raped. If it's my opinion that's offending you why bother with my spelling?

"Rapped"? Does someone do a drive-by on her with two turntables and a microphone?

rapped: to strike, esp. with a quick, smart, or light blow: He rapped the door with his cane.

Looks like we both got it wrong. I can blame it on public education. Where did you go to school?

I found it ironic because "rap" has cheapened the view of women. Much more than a whistle ever did.

Btw, rapists don't signal their victims by whistling first. It's a shame that male appreciation has become a victim to fearmongering.

I think it is fair to say that we don’t have the full picture from either the employee’s side or the store’s side. If this guy was a good employee I don’t know why the manager would have fired him unless he really messed up or this was the last in a string of problems with this kid. The manager is also an employee, and we should assume that his work record was at least no worse than that of the kid who got fired. If the boy was a good employee most managers would not want to lose him because good employees are hard to find, especially with 4.5% unemployment. There is more to the story, we just don’t know what it is. Without knowing more, it is hard to make a fair judgment, and therefore I won’t.

Humiliating someone isn't exercising a freedom.

Humiliating?! Why do women obsess over makeup, clothes and their weight if it's not to be considered attractive? And why complain when a man finds her so? Isn't that the whole point?

Again, the girl he whistled at was a friend and she didn't complain.

I didn't say rapists use whistling to signal their victims, although I wouldn't doubt that it's been done. I was using that as an example of how women used to be treated once they admitted to being raped.

BTW, I can't believe you associate a wolf's whistle with male appreciation. Pervert appreciation is more like it. Hey, my bosses daughter in-law just got here, maybe if I whistle at her in front of everyone, my boss will give me a raise for showing her my appreciation!

What? They were whistled at after being raped? What?

BTW, I can't believe you associate a wolf's whistle with male appreciation.

Yup. It was a mans way of saying "Wow!" and "Hubba-hubba".

Pervert appreciation is more like it.

Sure. Appreciating how a woman looks is the modern form of perversion.

Hey, my bosses daughter in-law just got here, maybe if I whistle at her in front of everyone, my boss will give me a raise for showing her my appreciation!

You want to be silly? Ok.

I noticed that you DIDN'T address this: Why do women obsess over makeup, clothes and their weight if it's not to be considered attractive?

"I've had the most experience dealing with terrorism,"

I watched "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982) last night... the number of "oddities" intrigued me:
the movie usher taking tickets and saying "smoking section is upstairs and to the right" (now illegal to smoke indoors at an establishment open to the public)
Mr. Hand locking the classroom door at the start of class (illegal, a hazard if there's a fire)
14 year old Stacey losing her virginity to the 19 year old with the hot car in the baseball dugout (statutory rape that would likely be punished today... although she engineered the encounter and lied about her age twice to be with an attractive and experienced man)...
The high school star athlete getting a new car from an alumnus (he'd lose eligibility and be on the front page today)...

My, how we've changed in such a short time.

“This issue has nothing to do with PC, Nannyism or the Thought Police. It has to do with public humiliation of women, and it’s not acceptable.”

LOL, are you channeling Gloria Steinam(sp)?

Some feminists of note -- past and present. Naomi Wolf may be a slight exception but that's about it.

This reminds me of our Jewish community newspaper, where a lot of Israelis advertise. Unfortunately, they're notorious for their, ahem, English, as well as lack of quality control.

Example found at a candy store: "Look for our beautifully raped Purim baskets."

I assume they meant "wrapped," though I couldn't help feeling sorry for those baskets.
