Teen Loses Job For Whistling At Co-Worker

POSTED: 9:12 am EDT June 3, 2007
UPDATED: 10:07 am EDT June 3, 2007

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The wrong kind of whistle resulted in a grocery store employee losing his job.

Tom Pacholke, 18, said he was fired April 27 by his employers at Nino Salvaggio market in Macomb County's Clinton Township after using what is known as a wolf whistle to get the attention of a co-worker.

The co-worker, who Pacholke said he's known since seventh grade, was wearing a prom dress and walking into the market, The Detroit News reported Saturday.

Pacholke, of Clinton Township, said he was called into the market's office 20 minutes later and fired from the job he had held about 18 months. The co-worker didn't complain about the incident, he said.

Nino Salvaggio said the company has a policy of not commenting on employment issues.

And yet they say that if a gay man hits on a straight man, he should “take it as a compliment”. Political correctness sucks.

What a couple of dumba**es! You guys are not to be believed. A wolf whistle is not harassment, especially if it is someone you have known most of your life. The only reason “wolf whistles are out” is because the freakin’ PC police have pushed BS like this until we all just comply. This PC crap has to stop. Getting fired for a whistle, especially when the girl didn’t complain, and even if she had, is just the height of stupidity and shows what a bunch of wussies this country has running and living in it now.

Even though the girl did not complain, maybe a customer did. And the owners may have wanted a certain atmosphere for their customers. Just a thought.

I’m betting he was a lousy employee, and they were looking for a reason to let him go. If he were working his tail off, something tells me this wouldn’t have happened. Anyway, a small family business usually knows what’s best. It’s not like it was some big dumb corporate policy.

At a former company I worked for, several guys were fired for sexual harassment only on the word of one woman. Turns out that later we found out she was just using that as an excuse to get rid of men so she could take over their jobs........She was eventually fired, but the men were never brought back...........

"Small family" companies can have "big dumb family policy" too......

True. But there’s a difference between ppl acting directly on their own behalf, and corporate tools (the free market’s version of bureaucrats) following idiotic “human resources” policy handbook crapola.

The only reason “wolf whistles are out” is because the freakin’ PC police have pushed BS like this until we all just comply

Back in the "good ole days" when wolf whistles were considered acceptable, women were afraid to report being rapped because of how they were treated by the police and everyone else who would find out what happened (AND NO, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DUKE CASE). If a woman was whistled at while going to or past a certain place repeatedly and she ended up getting rapped, it was her fault because she didn't stay away. It's not just a man's or a white man's world anymore. The sooner you accept this and learn to get over it, the better off you will be. If you really feel a need to treat a woman like she's dancing at a strip joint, then go to a strip joint. This issue has nothing to do with PC, Nannyism or the Thought Police. It has to do with public humiliation of women, and it's not acceptable.

The whistle may have offended some feminist customer within ear’s range and she complained. But I suspect the kid was backsliding at work and this was just the final straw. Only one side of the story being told here.

Some guys find it difficult to change as they get older. Of course if they were running an upscale store they'd be the first to defend their right to fire anyone.

this isn’t news. this isn’t anyone’s business. so freaking what. maybe the kid will learn to act like a gentleman.

I disagree. He whistled at a friend in a prom dress and she didn't complain. Maybe there was a PC busybody present. One that thought a whistle was ungentlemanly and wasn't a compliment.

““Sexual harassment” laws were pushed by women who were er..not attractive enough to be ‘harassed’ sexually.”

I think you have it backwards.

Is Michigan an “at will” state? If so this is complete non-news.

"Rapped"?

Does someone do a drive-by on her with two turntables and a microphone?

Only someone steeped in PCism could leap from a whistle to rape (not rap).

I'm a moral Christian who votes for conservatives because they tend to stand for more of the things I value than the liberals ever will. When enough neo-cons take over the conservative movement and turn it into the anything goes movement, I'm outta here. There's allot more to freedom than getting to do anything you want. Humiliating someone isn't exercising a freedom. Being allowed to fire someone for turning your establishment into something you don't want it to be is.

Just bleat like a sheep and take it, right?

What about the right of the employer to fire employees? Employees have no right to demand continued employment. He could have been fired for a spill on aisle #2, or wearing tennis shoes his boss didn’t like. Would I have fired the kid for this issue? If it was the first time, probably not, but I would have warned him that when working at my business employees are expected to treat others, co-worker or not, with respect and dignity, and not to let that sort of thing happen again. We don’t know about this guy’s personnel record, so we don’t know if he had any problems before. I won’t fault the employer for making this call without more evidence.

We also don't if this was his only offence. Although, we could surmise that he's been a pretty good employee since he's been there 18 months.
