May sales reflected the continuing strength of GM's new product portfolio. Increased sales of Chevrolet Impala and Saturn AURA as well as the new industry leading mid-size crossovers GMC Acadia, Saturn OUTLOOK and Buick Enclave demonstrate GM's strong positioning in the marketplace for fuel-efficient and alternative fuel (E-85) vehicles. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks - fuel efficiency leaders in their class - pushed GM's large pickup segment sales up 10 percent in total and 14 percent retail compared with May 2006.

"Our May results were extremely positive as we saw strong total and retail sales increases. We get so many negative articles and comments about the US auto industry. I thought some positive news would be a nice change of pace.

The Acadia and the Outlook really are nice machines.

The Outlook especially is a value. The Acadia is a bit overpriced relative to its competition, but....definitely a great vehicle.

I’ve always hated the Saturn brand but I almost ended up buying the Outlook a couple months ago. Very nicely done.

I’ve got an SLT-1 Acadia on order, went with the factory 19” rims, dual sunroof, Bose and the convenience package, plus I opted for the second row bench, which saved $495.00 over captains’ chairs. I needed a new co. vehicle, and this qualifies for Section 179 accelerated depreciation, but is rated 26 mpg highway and has more interior room than a Tahoe. I test drove the thing multiple times, just couldn’t believe it was from GM.

Saturn Aura is a great car, beautiful interior.   Its turning circle could be a deal-killer... 40.4 ft.!   Most SUVs can do better.

I got a new Silverado 4x4 crew cab with all the bells & whistles. No complaints. It’s even OK to burn E85, but I’ve yet to do so.

The Outlook is very nice, too. I ended up going for the GMC because I liked the beefier, more truck-like exterior appearance, plus I liked the techie, brushed aluminum and chrome interior. Saturn seems to be going for more of a Japanese look and feel, inside and out with the Outlook, with the swept back headlights and wood/chrome interior accents.

I find the Acadia way too heavy.

Saturn just needs to fix their logo, and they could double sales by erasing that mind-set.

A badge that’s shaped like the planet Saturn would be killer - kind of like the Sci-fi Channel, and not boxed into that frame with a red backround.

I wonder if a statistical analysis would show a positive correlation between the GM sales upturn and the recent introduction of GM advertising on Hannity and then Rush’s shows and their comments regarding GM? My recollection is that the focus of the GM ads and host comments are oriented toward getting potential car buyers to at least take a look at the GM offerings.

I’m surprised at myself, since I’ve never, ever bought a new domestic make. I’ve had a good experience with my Toyotas. But, this thing seemed to be a better fit for my requirements than anything else I encountered, and it looks so nice, not even any orange peel in the paint on the demonstrators that I drove. I’m feeling pretty good about the decision.

What strikes you as being too heavy comes across to others as feeling substantial. Plus, there's the GVW to consider, which is why Sec. 179 comes into play for business owners.

It is. On the right side is the planet, and the 'swoosh' on the left side is the ring.

Conservatives are a natural audience for a resurgent domestic manufacturer. We're not going to buy crap, but if you're like me, I've said for twenty years that I'd be thrilled to buy American, when they begin making something I want. I think that day has finally arrived.

Here's a pic of an Acadia that I found on the net, that is the identical SLT-1 in Liquid Silver, that I have on order:

“We get so many negative articles and comments about the US auto industry. I thought some positive news would be a nice change of pace.”

Only some of us see that as positive. There are a lot of freepers who are very much rooting for all of the American auto companies to fold.

Curious.

It's a striking car, but it's classic badge engineering; you're looking at an Opel when you look at a Saturn Aura. Turnabout is fair play, though, because the Sky is a domestic design, sold as an Opel overseas.

Yes, it is curious, isn't it? It's usually couched in terms of hating the UAW. Hey, there's no love lost with me on unions, either; I was trained in avoidance tactics while I was in the textile world, and I absolutely can't stand their commie egghead organizers. I can spot them at 100 yards. But, I have no desire to see entire industries driven to collapse, just to be rid of them. That's just plain scarey.

Bob Lutz is doing a great job at GM, and I'd like to think he's one of us at heart. I saw a great quote from him the other day: The best committee is a committee of one. Those are not the words of someone with a collective mentality.

GM is back :). The cars they have in the works are wonderful.
I am waiting for the new CTS with a stick.

Then I will happily fork over the dough.

I wish we had been able to wait a year to get an Outlook or Acadia. They are wonderfully executed, and definitely class leading.

The new CTS is sweet, isn’t it? The proportions are vastly improved over the current model, and the interior is finally up to snuff for the market segment. It’ll do well.

You make a great point as far as Sec 179 is concerned. Acadia is a huge step forward for GMC and GM. Just wait for the new Highlander...
