"Fred T does not have the fire in the belly, obviously." That might be, but I'll bet he has some burning embers in his heart -- enough to ignite the nation.

Oh? well its still 2007, the election isn’t untill Nov 2008; the Demos just jumped the gun on this election to punish Bush.

"During his 1994-2002 Senate tenure, he was considered a reliably conservative vote. But he had few significant legislative achievements and he established a reputation as a less-than-hard worker. "Nahhhh, I'll pass. Most agreed with your post, btw.

I hate to say this, but it really looks like it’ll be Romney or a Dem, and I’d give the GOP only a 33% shot at winning the Presidency

"If Fred were really serious about saving the day, hed have been there right from the start. Come on, get real."You did a fairly good job of ignorning what I originally asked. Do you have differences with Thompson on the issues, or are you totally concentrated on when and how someone declares and/or campaigns? Is that what the election is all about to you?

Still a Hunter supporter until Fred decides (then I’ll decide), but not wanting the presidency CAN be a plus.

"Thompson, however, said he still was not ready to commit to a 2008 campaign. "We've not made a final decision on it. But obviously we're thinking pretty seriously about it," he said. "Everybody who has an opportunity to make even a small difference in the course of the direction of the country has got to look at that very seriously." Obviously, he doesn't have the fire in the belly.

“As Mitt says to Fred, Come on in, the waters fine.”
I missed the email Mitt sent that said that. The one I got was nothing like that...lol

".......There was an awful lot of bad legislation that I helped to stop, for one thing."THAT,,,,in itself is a HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!!!
In fact, that's a bigger and more important accomplishment than much of the legislation that WAS passed. Fred should take a great deal of PRIDE in that!
Go, FRED, Go!!!!

Funny why CBS doesnt ask Hillary about her legislative achievements as a Senator for New york. How about Obama? Has he ever won a really-contested election (Keyes would have lost to a stuffed shirt)?

If Fred were really serious about saving the day, hed have been there right from the start. Come on, get real. If there were some other real conservative in the race who looked like he could win, I suspect Thompson would rather stay at home with his family than subject them to the travails of campaigning and serving as President of the United States.
As it is, though, I don't think such a person is likely to emerge. Romney might be okay, but I don't know that he'd be able to unseat Rudy. I doubt Fred Thompson particularly likes the idea of subjecting his family to 16 months of campaigning or 4-8 years of living in the White House, but he'd probably consider those to be less bad than having his family live 4-8 years under a Giuliani or Clinton regime.

...but not wanting the presidency CAN be a plus. Not sure it would be possible to get an honest answer out of candidates, but if it were I'd like to hear them asked:
If you had a choice between the Presidency being given to (1) you, or (2) someone whom you somehow knew to possess absolute knowledge, wisdom, and integrity, who would put the U.S. and its Constitution above all other considerations, which would you prefer?
I suspect there are plety of Democrats and RINOs who wouldn't want a president with integrity, but even among those who would want such a president I suspect there aren't all that many who would rather it be someone other than themselves.
Perhaps it's just an act, but I think Fred Thompson's biggest desire is that the office of the President be filled by a wise and honest person. He'd rather it be someone wiser and nobler than himself, but if that isn't possible he'll step in to try to stop it from being someone worse.

I doubt seriously that Fred will be there tonight on CNN, since it's the DEMOCRATS that will be "debating." I like the way Romney backers are so well-imformed - not knowing that the Republicans debate Tuesday night, and cooking up imaginary rules and "dues" for the race for the GOP nomination.
Meanwhile, back in the REAL WORLD, the only rules are those imposed by the Federal Election Commission. And what Fred is doing is in accordance with FEC rules.

Saundra Duffy wrote: "Well, Newt and Fred have a lot in common . . . big egos for one thing."
By that, are you implying that Romney doesn't have a big ego? If that's what you truly believe, then I have some beachfront property for sale in Arizona that you'd be interested in.
Why don't you Romney folks come back when you have something of substance to whine about instead of this silly stuff? Sheesh!

Who served in Algore’s Senate seat from 1985-1991? I know there was a talking tree sucking up oxygen on the Senate floor in those years.

Good grief, this whole mess started right after the 06 elections. A 2 year Pres campaign? Pulleezze. All these guys started early, gotta DO something, SAY something. I’d say that Fred Thompson was prudent, seeing who the field (the EARLY field) would be.
By the way, who do you like in ‘12? ‘16?
To: Politicalmom
Thompson has my vote, as soon as I move I register to vote hopefully that gets me to vote in the Primary, he gets my vote twice that way.
