...Second, does the world's largest economy depend on cheap exploitable labor that is akin to slavery? I bet the same arguments were made prior to the civil war about the necessity to have slaves to support the economy.

This is interesting. Has anyone systematically compared the pre-US Civil War debate over slavery with the rhetoric that is being bandied about now? I'd love to read a Krauthammer op ed that compared aspects of the current "discussion" on "immigration reform" to the arguments made at the time of the "Missouri Compromise."

I disagree. This wasn’t a problem overnight and it’s hypocritical to decide that it came up all of a sudden.

Why do you think conservatives want smaller government? Do you really believe that big government is efficient? Where does the boondoggle start and the mismanagement end?

Newt very predictable. 80/20 again much of what he said sheer brilliance and the rest just makes you want to hide under the coffee table, turn the sound down real low, so the neighbors don't hear and turn your head so you can't see who is really saying all those bad things about GW.

You mean the ones that BREAK the law and put owners of law abiding businesses in the position to compete with them while trying to be honest?

You want tod DEFEND THAT?

You want to defend that a single mother of 3 children has to mow lawns for $35 bucks becuase the illegals and Daddy will do it for $40 bucks to keep from paying taxes, being deported, or paying child support- and business owners are okay with this? They are okay with watching our communities turn into 3rd world ghettos and hospitals close because they want cheap labor while they fill their bank accounts?

Defend how they allow our school children waste time with kids who can’t speak English, and teachers and other public service people have to provide interpreters at tax payer’s burden?

Ya know— I don’t have any sympathy for the businesses who hire illegals. My children and I suffered for YEARS because I did not only the RIGHT thing— but the LEGAL thing... I paid DOUBLE taxes— SELF EMPLOYMENT taxes on that $35 bucks per lawn and $50 bucks per house. Cry me a river...........

If Clinton or Gore, or Kerry was pushing this crapt you wouldn’t be so quick to defend them.

You are a capitalist above being an American my friend - and at the cost of law abiding, hard working American people.

YOU are a perfect example why this bill stinks to high heaven-

Your priorities are that of the plantation owner crying about how he will get his cotton picked if he cannot have slaves. YOU sir, defend exploiting not only poor, uneducated, minorities and lawbreakers of foreign nations, but also the very people that send their children off to war to defend your damn property.

Her life is in danger, her family won’t talk to her or acknowledge her, and when you read the book, her father appears to be what we would have called “moderate”. It was her mother who went to extremes and then suffered as she could not do anything without a man’s help (and Ali’s father was often absent)
