He said a French naval vessel in the area had confirmed the ship was hijacked but was unable to intervene because it could not enter Somali watersWasn't an American destroyer inside Somali waters the other day for gunnery training?

Being European, they probably had no weapons on board. Bad move.

And just exactly *what* was the Somali Navy and Air Force going to do to the French, if they did intervene? A dhow with a 14.5mm HMG and a Cessna aren’t doing much.
The European Union thing sure is great for mutual defense, isn’t it?

why don’t ALL ships plying the east African coast carry shipboard arsenals ? The Somali pirates show up in their little boats , you waste them. Even if they have rpg’s , one guy with a scoped .308 or 300 Win mag can blow him right out of his boat .
They need to declare anything beyond 3miles offshore of Somalia a free fire zone. If it floats , light it up.

Pirates targeting ships not calling at Somalia
15 May 2007
Heavily armed pirates are subjecting vessels to violent attacks while in international waters
The attacks have been targeted towards vessels not calling at Somalia.
Vessels, not calling at Somalia, are advised to steer at least 200 NM clear of Somali waters at all times.

Piracy has been a favorite activity of Muslims for more than a thousand years.
I’m disappointed in the French, although maybe Sarkozy hasn’t yet had time to change the ROE on things like this.
What’s with this European Union thingy? They can’t seem to be bothered to defend each other or even to protest when someone kidnaps a member of the EU. When those British sailors were taken, the EU just shrugged and ignored the whole business.

"a French naval vessel in the area had confirmed the ship was hijacked but was unable to intervene because it could not enter Somali waters. " I thought the French are participating in WoT Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa?
