Bush scolds balking GOP
By Stephen Dinan and Ralph Z. Hallow THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 2, 2007
President Bush yesterday renewed his attack on Republicans who oppose his immigration bill, again charging that they are trying to "frighten people" and calling on supporters to rally around the compromise.
The president pleaded with senators to "show courage and resolve" to withstand outrage from voters in their districts.
"It is right to argue for what you believe and recognize that compromise might be necessary to move the bill along. And it is right to take political risk for members of the United States Congress," Mr. Bush said in his second impassioned plea this week on the issue and the second time that he has accused Republicans of trying to scare voters by labeling provisions in the bill an "amnesty."
But many Republican senators say the bill is both an amnesty and unworkable and argue that Mr. Bush's barbs are off the mark.
"I'm not going around frightening people. People are frightened, and they're trying to scare the politicians into voting the way they want them to," said Sen. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican, whose opposition to the bill has earned him standing ovations at speeches and events back home during the past week.
Mr. Bush's challenge followed a speech in Georgia on Tuesday that infuriated Republican opponents of his bill. And the renewed challenge came just a day after White House press secretary Tony Snow said the administration was trying to "lower the temperature and get people to talk about basic principles."
The fight is taking a serious toll on Republicans. The Washington Times reported yesterday that small donations to the Republican National Committee have dropped by an estimated 40 percent

Bush has succeeded in destroying the GOP. There is no one left to talk to him so now he sides with Ted Kennedy
Absolutely right. Reagan admitted his mistake and the amnesty he granted was tiny compared to the one Bush proposes. Also at that time we were not nearly as overwhelmed with illegals as we are today. Bush has betrayed our country and if allowed, will destroy our very language, culture, and identity. It will cease to be the country we know and will become a Latin American morass of corruption, crime, and all around degradation. He should be impeached NOW. (If only the democrats weren’t so pathetic.)
I am waiting for an HONEST explanation of his amnesty policy. More and more, Bush strikes me as a fraud.
'Hispanic' is a culture, not a 'race'. Mexican is a nationality, not a 'race'. Illegal immigration is a crime. Maybe someone can explain why the 'Hispanic' culture in Spain has been successful and the 'Hispanic' culture of Mexico has always been a miserable failure. The race card doesn't apply when it comes to criminal Mexicans and Central Americans. They need to be removed and that's that
Bush needs prayer to break off that stubbornness!
Otherwise - he will wind up at the bottom the the list of Presidents along with Jimmy! YUCK!
The Mexicans we see slinking over the border have as much Spanish blood in their veins as I do. They are mostly an amalgam of various indians who speak their own hodge-podge of Spanish. Mexican Spanish and Spanish Spanish are different. Even the alphabet differs.
Those Mexicans of mostly indian blood have been purposely downtrodden for the past 150 years by a government who would deny them any status in the educational community.
Instead of illegally entering this country to spoil things for those of us who were industrious enough to build a life and enrich our surroundings, these people need to crawl back over to border to work hard for change there.
We deport them the same way we hunt murderers down: one by one, if necessary, but they MUST leave. The hole they crawl through must be closed in order to deny them and muslim terrorists entry.
Our president's speaches scolding those who disagree with his generous immigration giveaway program makes him sound like a Jimmy Carter.
We can blow our own leaves. It's fun.
“You just have to wonder whats going on in his head.”
I believe the term is enigma.
One thing that pleases me, though, is that so many people are now finally waking up to what Bush represents. The free passes he has received from our side all these six years have continually amazed me, and there are still some who only very grudgingly are coming back to the reality that is Bush. I hope we do better next time.
It made Reagan wrong.
There’s no value in making 20-50 million illegal immigrants legal immigrants at the stroke of a pen.
They are valuable to corrupt businessmen exploiting them only as long as they are illegal aliens.
Once they are legal aliens, all of the costs employers avoided by hiring illegal aliens are suddenly brought back into play, creating a vast demographic of unemployed and unemployable aliens draining the Welfare State.
Worse, those employers will now obtain additional hosts of illegal aliens...to keep their costs down.
Exactly,
ANY SOLUTION MUST BEGIN with sealing the borders.
Without first sealing the borders, any attempts to resolve the problem of illegal aliens is only spitting in the wind.
Has Bush’s body been taken over by aliens, aka Men in Black? GW sure is taking this country down a rat hole and Democrats don’t even have to raise a finger.
I see revolution in the future. Americans will not take this sitting down.
I don't agree. I think the focus of anger should be directed at the top of governmnet, which is the the Executive Mansion. Every politician's eyeballs are on it, democrat and republican. The people have spoken loud and clear, and rest assured are watching intently to see who votes on this issue and how.
The war against America.
Love the post with the clown car added!!
“Para espanol prensa ocho para la diabetes del tipo dos.”
Do you honestly think that's how it works? Party leaders have a sit down with a sitting two term pres and read HIM the riot act? Lol, he'd show them door so fast it would make their collective head swim and he'd laugh while doing it. Newsflash, after winning a 2nd term, a president's political career is over. With no political future, the party has no position to bargain from.
