His 15-year-old brother, Stephen, has joined him, carrying a loaded Ruger .22-caliber rifle slung over his shoulder.

I thought there was an age limit on carrying arms. I guess it depends on the state. It would definitely be surprising to see a 15 year old walking around with a loaded weapons.

I walked around with a loaded weapon when I was 15 years old.

Yeah..kinda depends on the kid. My teen handles shotgun and pistol safely and responsibly..still I can see how some people would freak out at ANY armed teen in today's society.

Hi napscoordinator,

Aw hell, no. Both of my boys have been using guns since they were eight. The only thing I would say to a 15 yr old with a .22 rifle is: "Going gopher hunting?"

Teenagers with .22's are almost as common as teenagers with fishing poles.

Now I grant you that it depends upon the "look" of the kid, but so long as he's a clean-cut redneck boy, it wouldn't even raise an eyebrow on me.

I do have a bit of a problem with a 15 year old carrying arms without adult supervision. Just from a legal standpoint, anyone under 18 is not an adult and generally can’t be held legally responsible for their actions. The “charged as an adult” exceptions are in cases where there was a very serious crime, with obvious criminal intent, and usually a long juvenile rap sheet as well. “I forgot to make sure it wasn’t loaded” or “I forgot to consider the backstop” don’t get you charged as an adult (nor should they). The right can reasonably be curtailed for a minor or mentally deficient person who cannot be held to the accompanying responsibilities.

Then my childhood towns would have shocked you. We all had guns, our military fathers had guns, and summer was get on your bike and go plinking season. Ammo cost was our only discouragement.

It's perfectly legal here in Idaho. We have 15 year olds driving cars too. Far more dangerous.

I thought the same thing also. I thought you needed to be 21 to carry a handgun (except when hunting or at a shooting range). I am 100% for concealed carry- However, I am not sure walking around town with a rifle slung over your shoulder in the best idea. Walking down a back road with a rifle slung over your shoulder when walking to a trail to go deer hunting is one thing. However, walking down 'main street' doing so might not be a good idea. If you want to be armed at all times, just strap on a handgun and flap your shirt over it so it can't be seen and so they the local police don't get flooded with phone calls.

A pity, isn't it?

It wasn't all that rare not so long ago (40 years).

I was hunting whitetail deer at the ripe old age of nine--in Maryland.
