Calexico schools remove students who fail to prove residency

Dozens of children were removed from public schools in this border city under a policy that aims to ensure all students live within district boundaries.

Taxpayers have repeatedly urged the Calexico Unified School District to make sure students do not cross the border from Mexico, Superintendent David Alvarez said. The district asked all 10,000 students to prove residency by Wednesday under the policy adopted last year.

"We're not interested in a student's citizenship status or their legal status here in our district," Alvarez said. "What the law requires us to do is verify whether a student lives in the Calexico school district boundaries or not."

Dozens of students were kicked out Wednesday.

Jorge Fuentes, whose 7-year-old grandson was told to leave Blanche Charles Elementary School, said his family was unfairly punished. The boy and his mother are U.S. citizens, but the mother, who is living with her parents, was unable to prove that she was a homeowner or renting. And she couldn't come up with a utility bill with her name on it.

"We've lived here legally for 18 years; we shouldn't be penalized for people who come from (Mexico) and attend public schools in Calexico," Fuentes said.

Calexico is located about 120 miles east of San Diego.

How about within national boundaries?

That is because she is neither. She is a freeloader however.

How dare that Superintendant try to protect the interests of his taxpayers! He obviously doesn’t want to do what’s best for America.

It’s because Mexicali is right across the border.

I have been there and seen the border.

That area of So Cal has women in labor come across the border to have anchor babies and then they usually go back home.

The maternity wards are busier than they are in major cities.

It is about time that citizens started to demand that the government be responsible with there money.

This is a FIRST step , what they need to do is remove the illegals too.

Isn’t school out for the year? Did they wait for the last day of school to do this?

"This is a FIRST step , what they need to do is remove the illegals too."

If all the freebies are withdrawn, the incentive for Illegals to come over to steal services would be gone.

She's a freeloader for living with her parents?

This is one way to peg illegals without asking about legal status - all you local LEOs out there take note.

Probably because so many hispanics live together. I teach ESL and it's astounding to me how many people put the same address on their application. One person puts rent, utilities in his/her name and the people who live there change regularly. They usually have some familial association or ties that go back to the country of origin with the person whose name everything is in.

Well she could not prove any rent payments or utilities. It is one thing to live with your parents and another to live off them. Just my 0.02. ( I watched my brother do it for years).
