IMHO, a robust, well-trained, well-supplied, strong military should be Job #1 for the federal government. Many (most?) of their other "jobs" should be severely curtailed or cut entirely to be left to individual states. National defense is one area that should be permanently strong.

We could start by chopping off the Dept. of Education, the Dept. of Energy, the Dept. of Homeland Security, the IRS (Fair Tax baybeee!), National Endowment for the Arts, PBS, NPR, congressional pensions for convicts, the Ad Council, reimbursements to the ACLU and funding for the U.N.

There's plenty of money to do what the feds really ought to do.

TChris calls for a smaller federal government. As long as the republicrats are in office we will never have smaller government. We have to have a complete change in paradigm and I do not see that anywhere in the tea leaves.

Ummm Chris.....you are aware that the Department of Energy is the foundation for deterrent nuclear muscle in the DOD ?

DOE/NNSA builds, maintains and delivers to the DOD their big hammers......

Agree SLB, yet we tend to always prepare for our next war based on the last war. As good as cougars & strykers are I have to wonder if they will perform cross country like tracked vehicles in the wet cold of Koreas , Bosnia etc etc ?

TChrist is right in most of his suggestions....... as without a very very strong military, full time , volunteer force we will always be just solving incidents.......in a reactive mode vs a proactive mode.

America must again become a hard target with the ability to strike anywhere on earth withing minutes instead of days or weeks.

A generation has forgotten what power America has t lay waste to any aggressor. Conventional or not........
