McClatchy Exclusive: Bush Accuses Conservative Critics of Fear-Mongering on Immigration

Firing back at conservative critics, President Bush defended his plan to overhaul immigration laws Tuesday and accused its opponents of "trying to rile up people’s emotions" with misinformation.

In an exclusive interview with McClatchy Newspapers, Bush expressed his determination to fight for changes that would let millions of illegal immigrants gain legal status. He cast the debate as a struggle over America’s soul and its reputation as a welcoming nation.

"I’m deeply concerned about America losing its soul. Immigration has been the lifeblood of a lot of our country’s history," the president said during an interview on Air Force One. "I am worried that a backlash to newcomers would cause our country to lose its great capacity to assimilate newcomers."

Bush underscored his commitment to the proposed overhaul — despite harsh criticism from some conservatives — as he traveled to Georgia for a speech that blasted the legislation’s critics.

"I’m sure you’ve heard some of the talk out there about people defining the bill. It’s clear they hadn’t read the bill. They’re speculating about what the bill says, and they’re trying to rile up people’s emotions," he told an audience at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, near Brunswick. "If you want to kill the bill, if you don’t want to do what’s right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it, you can use it to frighten people. Or you can show leadership and solve this problem once and for all."

Bush acknowledged that the proposed overhaul faces a difficult time in Congress, where it’s under attack from both ends of the political spectrum.

He hasn’t changed. We are just now finding out his true agenda and it isn’t good for us. This is Daddy’s agenda. That is why he is buddy buddy with Clinton. No more Clintons or Bushs! We have been “outFOXed”!

I once had an experience in the local Ross store. The loud speakers were begging people to keep their children under control.

A child walked in front of me and threw a hanger at me. I picked it up and gave it to the women with the child and asked her to please watch the child. A few minutes later a young women confronted me, and said that it was her child and that he was just a baby and his actions couldn't be controlled.

I just walked away shaking my head. The idea that someone would take their child into a store and ignore his behavior is just amazing.

“The idea that someone would take their child into a store and ignore his behavior is just amazing.”

It’s a different mentality. As a welfare worker, I had a woman yell at me, “it’s easy for you! You have everything!”

I have nothing I didn’t work long and hard to attain. Moron. So glad I left there!

Why should they? They are not immigrating, they are colonizing. 40 million more, headed your way, if Jorge has his way.

You're right of course, and I can't believe how I've come to feel about the Party I've supported for so long, and the man I've helped to put in office twice.

I never expected (naive though I may be) to see the face of raw government arrogance in the GOP, but it does appear that they have grown weary of even pretending to give a damm what we think.

It looks like the American people will soon see the real consequenses of so many decades of whoring ourselves to government.

"Perhaps Bush is showing his true colors."

Yep, use the conservatives to get elected, then screw them over and spend like a drunken sailor, turn the country over to the liberal agenda and open the borders to anyone and everyone.

The Bush-Clinton agenda and Jorge is moving fast now that his time is running out. Hey Jorge, Why weren't those tax cuts made permanent?

Hmmnnn? Could there be an obvious reason?

Enter Hillary, cheating will get her everywhere.

"Disrespecting the president by referring to him as "Jorge" is a personal insult to me and every other member of this forum that supports him and I see it as a disruptive tactic of a common DU troll. When you post like a DU troll, don't be surprised when you get banned like a DU troll. 25 posted on 08/27/2006 11:35:51 PM EDT by Jim Robinson"

Get a grip.

I dont support his shamnesty either but thats over the top.

Calling the President a Fool, Idiot, Jorge, and sounding as if you would be happy if his daughters were killed by a drunk illegal would make you happy is something that would fly better at DU.

“I’m sorry I ever voted for the guy now.”

Same here, but I’m going to do something about it. I’m with Will Rogers. He said about all politians: “Why would you want to vote and encourage them?”

Always voted for the last 48 years, but no more. We’re on our own here, people. Best revenge is to live well.

Several years ago, I worked for a large (well-known) food company. We were updating their union payroll system and wanted to have a unique key into the employee file by SSN. Guess what, multiple cases of several people using the same one, and also people coming back with a slightly different name after being let go under the old one. A real eye opener.

However at that time, according to Federal Law (I assume it is still the same), the company was forbidden from asking for proof of citizen ship or green card until after they had hired them. So with these Federal rules in place, it is impossible not to hire illegals.

Bush is suffering from the same malady - Washington Elitism or WE - that virtually all in Washington suffer from once they've been there too long.

In its early stages WE sufferers forget their roots and forget who sent them to Washington.

As WE progresses the sufferer advances to insulting and berating their supporters as they believe their opinions and ideas are superior to their now confused supporters.

In the terminal stage the WE sufferer angers their now former supporters so much that they are voted out of office or, in extreme WE cases, their former supporters call for impeachment.

...they’re trying to rile up people’s emotions.

Your "America's soul" phoney baloney gets my emotions riled up more than any talk show host, Mr. Bush.

You can count on not having my support, I hope you don't need it during your waning days in office or beyond.

‘You’re right of course, and I can’t believe how I’ve come to feel about the Party I’ve supported for so long, and the man I’ve helped to put in office twice. ‘

I was a lifelong registered Independent til a year or so ago, when the Ohio GOP began overtly attacking Ken Blackwell on behalf of Jim Petro in the primaries. I couldn’t stand ‘on the sidelines’ and you can’t vote in the GOP primaries here without stating party affiliation. So I don’t qualify as a ‘long time Republican’.

Outside of that, I’m exactly where you are these days.

‘It is Biblical to love your enemy.’

I do subscribe to this but love to me is doing the right thing, holding them to high standards, holding them accountable, believing the best of them. Love is not this namby pamby feeling. Corinthians 13 says nothing about bleeding hearts.
