EDINBURGH, May 30, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) Scotland is reporting an all-time high in the number of abortions being committed; as a solution the country is offering more sex-education in schools and free condoms.
13,081 pregnancies were terminated in Scotland in 2006, compared with 12,603 the year before, with the highest rates among those women aged between 16 and 19. The level of abortions among those aged under 16 also reached a record high of 362 in 2006, from 341 the year before and 309 in 2004.
The BBC reports that the greatest increase is in so-called medical or chemical abortions, those procured directly with drugs rather than surgery. This rate rose dramatically, with 59.1% carried out last year, compared with 16.4% when they were first introduced in 1992.
The government of Britain has touted abortion drugs as a safe alternative to surgical abortions. The deadly drugs methotrexate for earlier stages of pregnancy, and misoprostol and mifepristone (RU 486, mifeprex) for late-term abortions are under heavy scrutiny after a number of women died in the US. The UKs abortion provider BPAS, formerly known as the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, said the rate of women using the abortion drug Mifeprex doubled between 2005 and 2006.
Public Health Shona Robison responded saying, The Scottish government is committed to improving Scotland's sexual health and reducing the number of unintended pregnancies through Respect and Responsibility, the national sexual health strategy.
The Tayside area had the highest abortion figures for those aged from 15 to 44 with 15.7 abortions per 1,000 women. Tayside is also seeing an alarmingly high rate of sexually transmitted diseases. In response, Tayside announced that it will implement a new strategy to combat teen pregnancy: condoms for free at drugstores near schools; making the morning after pill available at GP offices near schools; and increased advertising for sexual health services in secondary schools.
With the abortion rates on the rise, Scotlands Catholic prelates are becoming more vocal in their criticism of what they call a deadly social experiment.
Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, Keith Cardinal OBrien, called a pack of lies assurances by the government in 1967 that legalized abortion would be allowed only in exceptional circumstances.
In a pre-published homily for the Churchs annual Day for Life Mass, the Cardinal says, We were told that backstreet abortions were killing women and had to be decriminalised. We were told abortion would only be used in extreme cases. We were told medical scrutiny would be rigorous. We were told lies and misinformation masquerading as compassion and truth.
Yes, life is precious and precious also are those lives that are snuffed out in darkness, hidden from the world.

Rates of drinking and drug usage are also at all time highs in Scotland. And religious observance at an all time low.
Coincidence? Hardly. Personal accountability is draining away.
Wait until they become independent in a few years time. They will be a pro-Europe Socialist Utopia, where underage pregnancy and termination will be like making a cup of tea.
Oh wait, its alternative lifestyle choice and we musn’t judge must we ?
‘Rates of drinking and drug usage are also at all time highs in Scotland. And religious observance at an all time low.

Considering that the figures quoted in the article mean that Scotland’s abortion rate in half that of America, perhaps you should address your own problems before pontificating on those of other countries.
Looks like the high level of ‘religious observance’ in the US is just for show and doesn’t reflect the morality of the people going to church. One in every 248 Americans has an abortion compared to one in every 460 Scots. . . . .
The liberal evil has had a longer time to pervert our nations belief in our sacred right to life. We are just beginning to turn the tide. To argue that European morality is anything but a disaster, much less the economic catastrophy due to liberal expansion is naive. Arguing against the evil of liberalism is not pontification, it is the duty of all decent people.
The “high level of religious observance” you demeaningly refer to as “just for show” shows more naivity assuming that those who are Christian are responsible for the abortion, when indeed it has been liberalism-the antithesis of Christianity which bears the guilt for killing all those babies. Classic example of the blame the victim by the abuser for suffering the abuse syndrome.
A very appropriare screen name.
‘To argue that European morality is anything but a disaster, much less the economic catastrophy due to liberal expansion is naive.’
To argue such sweeping generalisations of what you perceive to be ‘European’ morality is not naive, it is stupid. Whatever the levels of european morality and church attendance are, europeans abort less children than Americans do.
‘Arguing against the evil of liberalism is not pontification, it is the duty of all decent people.’
Indeed, but that is not what was happening here. Low church attendance and liberalism was being blamed for the abortion rate in Scotland by an American who ignored the fact that America has a far higher rate of abortion and yet claim to be better church-goers and less liberal than Scots. If that is the case, then church attendance and liberalism are evidently not directly proportional to abortion as the poster implied.
‘The high level of religious observance you demeaningly refer to as just for show shows more naivity assuming that those who are Christian are responsible for the abortion, when indeed it has been liberalism-the antithesis of Christianity which bears the guilt for killing all those babies.’
Now who is being naive? The 1.2m babies aborted in the US came from all sections of society, the majority being those who describe themselves as christians. A 2003 CBS poll showed that more than 75% of Americans are in favour of some form of abortion - in a country that describes itself as 77% christian it is an arithmetic impossibility that abortions are primarily by non-christians.

‘Classic example of the blame the victim by the abuser for suffering the abuse syndrome.’
Classic example of trying to blame other cultures for the failings of ones own.
.
So you think that by changing the argument you win? You indeed are idiotic. Generalization or not European morality or lack thereof was a direct cause of the murder of tens of millions of people in the last century. Their glorification and obsession with death continues to this day. Yes, admittedly it has spread through those we commonly referred to as liberals in this great nation, but without any comparison the point is that Europe stand alone is a moral, economic and political mess. Generalization or not,is is a simple fact. You can bluster, you can spit for all I care but it won’t change the truth.
